C'mon it was a par 70. 59 is easy! J/K That was amazing. I can't imagine shooting a score that low.

Anyone think that the course set-ups are being eased down a bit to facilitate scoring? Appleby putted like a madman, but two 59's in one year, and several near misses seems a little odd to me.

I agree 100%. If Tiger isn't playing then there needs to be some excitement around the tournament to generate revenue. Lower scores are an easy way to do that.

I think this is the case too.The fallout from Tigergate, combined with the economic situation has been bad for golf. Not as many people are watching, so the sponsors can't justify paying the vast amount of money they have been for tournaments. There are doubts about the future of a number of tour stops going forward. So what's the answer?Easy setups > Low scores (including a couple of 59's) = increased interest in the tour again.

A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

Stop...just stop slurping Tiger, bro. 59s can happen. That course has never been hard (for PGA standards)...

Yep.It's never been hard, and no one's ever shot 59 on it in competition either.Making an easy course even easier with pin placements is only a good idea if you're

looking for very low scores and possible 59's.

I doubt there would an issue with the course or pin placement's if Tiger or Phil had done it!!

Who? Do those guys still even play on th PGA Tour?

Really nice to see Appleby shoot a 59 and win the tournament. I always root for Appleby to play well--ever since that heartbreaking press conference he did in '98.

According to an interview with a USGA official, drive distances have been lower this year than previous years, so there's no intention of changing the rules for drivers or balls. Dick Rugge, Senior Technical Director for USGA made the following statement:

I doubt driver distances are down much. And if a rollback does not happen, all a course like this one can do is just to narrow the fairways and grow the rough. I don't care to see U.S. Open type set ups every week, but 22 under par is a little much on the other side too. This course set up looked more suitable for the Champions Tour.

I'm happy for Appleby. I'm just afraid 59's are going to be more the norm with the combination of high tech equipment and courses like this one.

Don't you think that's perhaps a bit picky? What's wrong with the occasional birdie fest? It was fun to see someone shoot 59. I guarantee you that if you put most people on the green 20 feet away from every hole on the par threes and randomly in the fringe in one shot on par fours and two shots on par fives that they wouldn't shoot 59. Most golfers probably wouldn't even break 65. Appleby still had to hit some incredibly good shots and putts.
