Let me start by saying I suck, play casual, shoot 50 for 9. usually only play 9.

I golf with a good friend that always hits to the right.
dead right, right off the club face, with a slice right.
No matter what he tries 95% of the time it goes right.
Is there anything you can suggest without seeing his stroke?
I really want to make this game more enjoyable for him.
Thanks.

What you describe is a push slice, inside out swingpath and open clubface at impact. Without much more information - did he ever try a stronger grip and making sure that is wrist is not cupped at impact?

he tried that (aiming left), it comes off his club 45 Deg. There has to be something that can straighten him out a bit.

I'd suggest going to the range with him and a list of slice remedies. Have him try them one at a time. If he's a friend of yours it's worth a try. And take a video camera with you to record the differences.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

I'd imagine that anybody who always hits the ball like that probably doesn't understand "wrist cupped at impact". The stronger grip suggestion is a good one siince that's fairly easy to comprehend.

I'd recommend lessons or at least a subscription to one of the golf mags out there since they do a pretty good job of giving non-technical & visual swing instruction for people who don't understand fundamental swing mechanics. There's a number of suggestions & tips they give that might not be great for the experienced golfer, but they'll probably be an improvement over what he's doing now.

If he hits dead right and still slices, he got the face wide open at impact (causing the ball to start right) and his swing path may be on plane or over the top (causing ball to curve right). Hard to say on swing path without seeing his ball flight. Could be that he's on plane but just with an open face.

Lots of things can cause this. Does he have a left arm chicken wing? Is his head moving toward the target on his downswing? Too weak of a grip?

I like the firm grip idea, should be easy to relay.
how about cupped hands?

I too think the club is wide open.

I have had him try 100 things, I think he tries to change his swing, it is just the same every time.

I mean if he has the same result ever time, he must be doing the same thing.

That's why video is such a great tool, some folks learn better with visuals. He needs to see what his body is doing and then he can try and change it.

Can you explain the cupped wrist. As someone who fights this I can say that it's extremely frustrating. I'll go 5 or 6 holes driving the ball straight down the center and the I'll lose it. It really feels like I'm making the same swing but the ball is slicing like crazy. HELP!

This is more a quick fix so he doesn't injure someone or destroy property. When on the tee, point the logo of the golf ball up at his right shoulder. Tell him to hit outward and almost into the ground at the logo. If he smothers it, point the logo a little lower towards his waist or a little more outward.

Couldn't have said it better, mags give good tips for this situation and help explain the swing somewhat.

Basically dragging his hands through the hitting zone without 'turning them over' to square the clubface. The good news is that this is the feeling your friend will want (to a lesser extent) when trying to hit a fade after he improves to that point.

The other tip you could try is to tell him to finish his backswing with his hands as low as possible. It's almost impossible to finish with low hands and not turn your wrists over (unless the guy is a contortionist or something or totally pulls himself off balance).

I had a golf buddy back in the day (wound golf balls and wooden woods) who hit banana slices off the tee so badly we could only play courses that had an open fairway on the right. OB right? Forget it. From 100 yards in though, his all arms swing was deadly. A good putter too - too good - gave him just enough confidence to not take lessons for his horrid driving.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
