Phil is finally going to get the number one ranking unless he chokes.

Its probably one of the biggest waits in sports history for an individual

Posted
According to the Golf Channel, Phil needs to either:
  • Win
  • Place in the top 4 while Tiger places below 36th
Not 100% sure that it was exactly 36th place, but it wasn't far from that. Considering Tiger would need to shoot about -11 tomorrow to get that high in the rankings, it's all on Phil's shoulders.

There are a lot of good players at the top within three strokes of each other right now though. Too early to call, but will be fascinating to watch.

37th right now is -1, and Tiger's +11, so no chance of him making that. Can't see Phil finishing outside the top 4 either to be honest. Showing some highlight's of Tiger's round now.Shocking is the only word that describes it.

Being a fellow lefty, Phil has always been my favorite golfer, so it's long overdue.

Clearly his mind is not where it should be at the moment. Bunker shots, chips, flop shots, miss, miss, miss, miss. Getting his swing fixed will give him confidence and focus to the rest of the game. When he hits the ball to where he can make a birdie, he can make one. When he through three rounds at Firestone has found 35% of the fairways and 46% of the greens, he can't possibly be hitting the ball very well.

I doubt this is one of the highest awaited sporting events. Tiger winning and playing well again would rank higher I think. There is no doubt Phil is in the best position he's ever been for the number one spot.

Looks like Phil will have to play really well just to finish in the top four.

what happens if t finishes no. 78?

Well, then he can honestly say he's been at the top and the bottom of the heap. If nothing else, this performance will give him much perspective.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

"History in the Making"? "Take #1 by force!"? Phil is backing into the number one ranking after a good, but hardly amazingly great year. Tiger was #1 for so long because he very clearly was an enormously dominant force for over a decade. No question. Regarding the "history in the making" and the "take #1 by force": Can you really, accurately describe Phil as "dominating"? Especially in light of what "dominating" has come to mean since the late 90s?

Hes doing good enough to possibly become the worlds number one ranked golfer. He has stood behind Tiger for how many years ? This is an epic moment for both of their careers. .

Unless Phil goes out and shoots 74/75 and finishes down the field, which is a

distinct possibility. That would be classic Phil.Just when you expect something, you get the complete opposite.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
