I usually play a little here and there and go to the heated ranges a bit. This year I am going to give up golf for a bit to do some stuff around the house and save some money. It is going to be hard for me but I think I am not playing after mid september. I can't just practice and not play. If I practice, it makes me want to play, and vice versa. I guess I will become more of a gym rat and cycle/mountain bike this fall.

Honestly, my best golf is usually early when I haven't played much and had some time off so I don't expect to be too behind next year.

Heated driving range, golf simulator, chipping/putting on carpet. For the most part during the winter months I put my golf game away and focus on hockey anyways.
The nice thing is that when golf season ends, hockey season has started and by the time hockey season ends, golf season is in full swing.

Here in Wisconsin, I spend the occasional afternoon in the winter hitting into a net or make a trip to a local simulator. It's also a good time of year to work on putting drills. But if I had my way, I'd be living near my step-mom in TN and playing all year long ...

I sometimes say that Id love to move someplace warm where I could play year-round, but I think that I would miss winter. Sure, the cold can be brutal sometimes but its also a very beautiful time of year.

Last winter was my first Winter since taking up golf and I didn't swing a club since the first snow that covered the grass until my first round in the Spring(other than my putter). My first round in the Spring was the best round I can recall. Not my best score, but definitely my best round as far as ballstriking, accuracy, and distance. I was pounding everything dead straight right where I wanted to put it.

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

You build a heated 10 1/2 foot ceiling garage :) Keep in mind those plastic practise balls will put some nasty dents in your garage door insulation! Some of us found out the hard way:(

I couldn't do it. Maybe if I was born into it and didn't know any better. I can't imagine not playing for 4-5 months though. It doesn't get too cold where I live, maybe a couple days with a high in the 40s, but I'm glad I have the option of going to the coast or down south to San Diego and playing :)

yep..November through March...can't count on any golf in that stretch. We have an indoor range...but I too despise hitting off mats. TW11 will have to do.

This is my first year golfing, so it's also going to be my first winter of golf withdrawl. There is an indoor driving range, but it's $30 for an hour, and it only extends 150 yards. There is also a driving range that has heated bunkers for hitting out of, and I'll probably end up going there, depending on how warm it stays in the bunkers when it's -30C outside.

That range also has about five golf simulators and a fairly nice little complex with nice big leather couches. It's $24 for a round, so I'll probably end up playing that once a week or so. It's owned by an Asian family, and the mother and father make sushi to order. You wouldn't think sushi from a driving range would be good, but it's better than a few restaurants I've been to.

Wow..$30 an hour is criminal!

A couple of courses stay open all year, indoor or heated ranges; and bowling leagues start here shortly (and go deep into next May )

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
