I am going to do some paint fills on the spider and text as well, so that should be fun.  Hope it turns out ok.

Good idea - That will look cool. Gonna match it to the red that's already there?

Yeah I plan on filling the spider with red.  I will do where it says SBR in white and the Spike's Tactical in either red or white.  Not sure on that yet.

Started working on the lower a bit last night.  A lot of tiny pins and springs, wow!  haha!

Lower build complete, that was not so bad.  Now I just need to buy the upper and do the paint fills.

That was quick. Starting to look like a rifle.

Forgot a little spring in the trigger assembly and had to take it all back apart again, but it was really only about 30-45 minutes of actual work putting parts in.  Figuring out what went where took a bit trying it for the first time.

  • 3 weeks later...

.300 AAC uppers have been hard to find.  I decided to go with the 5.56 for now and I can get the .300 down the road.  Ordered a PSA 5.56, with 1 and 7 twist, and mid gas for $399 today.  It comes with the BCG and charging handle.  It is a great deal for a complete mid length gas upper.  It should be smooooooth.  Odered a scope as well.  I need to get out there and chase some 'yotes, I don't want to delay finishing it any longer.   Completed pics are coming in a week or two.

Not for hunting I know; but has anyone used the new RIP ammo? Scary cool.

Looks cool, but I am not buying into it yet.  I am not a fan of anything that fragments.  For a number of small caliber handguns, many believe(myself included) that FMJ is the way to go.  That being said I do have Hornidy Critical Defense in my LC9, but it has a polymer filling that helps aid in penetration...supposedly.  I use it because it is lighter and easier to control in that small package.  I still often wonder if I should just have FMJs in it though.   The 9mm is right on the fence IMO between the two choices.

I use CD in my 45. RIP has the advantage of no shoot thru as well with one shot stop. I realize frags have legal issues between states if you find yourself in court. If zombies attack I will go with 7.62 x 25.

I will dbl check on that cause now you have me curious. I thought the plug was to facilitate rapid expansion just after muzzle clearance. Critical D rounds are intended for close quarter interactions within the six to twenty foot zone. Mine are scored in an arc to open like a fan blade. They are not quite like the ones you have. Then again the 45 throws a Volkswagon and does not have 9mm zip. That may be the design variable. Yours are probably more accurate at longer range. Speaking of longer range.. if the zombies are 500 meters out I have plenty of 7.62 X 54r as well. 1928 hex nicely weighted with Siberian Beech instead of the later heavy Pine. A real sweetie. Set up "squirrel sighted" but not really suited for actual use on a squirrel!![quote name="cipher" url="/t/40909/anyone-else-here-hunt/90#post_944107"]Looks cool, but I am not buying into it yet. My apologies it aids in expansion more quickly on impact.  From Hornady's website:

The best way to understand the

function of the design is to think

that what Hornady has done is use

a hydraulically active medium to

essentially “pre-f ll” a very large hollowpoint

nose cavity, thus eliminating

the hole that might be plugged

by an attacker’s clothing or other

material while providing a jumpstart

to the expansion process.

For some reason, standard HP ammo can get clogged with clothing and it will not expand sometimes.

I don't want to start a gun control debate here so please let's not get into that.  I just love this video.  I was talking to someone today about how certain types of guns are just not fun to shoot.  In fact my favorite gun to shoot is my 22 rifle.  Wonder why?  Here you go:

I just muted it so I didn't have to listen to Joe. Haha, very funny though. I've never seen this one. Love it when the guy's pants fall down!

Well what he is saying is kind of an important part of the video. However, essentially he is recommending a double barreled shotgun for ladies and home defense because an AR is too hard to aim and shoot... ;)
