I would choose a 5 iron as I need a little more distance with my shorter swing. Really cool thought though, has anyone ever tried it out? Even for nine holes?

The best "known" round of golf with 1 club was John Daly. (7 iron)

I believe he shot even par.

No I believe it was by Roy McAvoy

I think I'd go with my Hybrid only because I can putt better with that compared to my 6 iron.

Would be either the 6 or 7 iron.... Would depend a lot on the course (long, lots of trouble, etc, etc)

I would play my hybrid. You can hit it a decent distance off the tee, you can use it to chip, and it's better to putt with than an iron.

i would rather hit a 6 iron for shorter-than-full-swing distances...let's say 120 yard to the pin, but i'm actually ok at making little knock down shots with the utility club.

A 7-iron for me. If I really want to blast it I could probably hit it 200 yards with a big hook. I can also get out of bunkers and hit some shorter shots pretty high, too.

With a hybrid I don't see how you people are going to play any shots that require loft.

Given three clubs, I would choose a 3W, a 5-iron, and a 9-iron. I'd putt by blading the 9-iron (I often practice putting with a PW).

I have never tried one club. I have played with 3 invoving a not so friendly bet with a person who had a problem counting their strokes . I bet him $100.00 I could beat him with only 3 clubs as long as witnesses kept the scorecards. Since his claimed handicap was an 8 and he really played to about a sixteen it wasn't even close. I carried a 7 wood, 6 iron and a putter.

I would probably choose the 5 iron, the shortest club I could hit and have a chance of paring par 5s.

After disgusting, horrific round I decided I'm not up to "real golf" anymore and I played with 7 iron only (incl. putting) holes 13 through 18 on my home course. Managed to score 4 over on 6 holes, including a sand shot from a deep bunker and a chip-in on 18th for a par
it was the BEST scoring streak of my round that day !

If I could find a course without deep greenside bunkers, I'd use a short shafted hybrid. But failing that, an 8 iron would be my choice.

It would be a tossup between my 5-iron, 6-iron, and 7-iron. In the end, I'd just split the difference and choose the 6-iron. It has just enough loft to chip a little, and I could hit it close to 200 yards from time to time. As for putting, it really wouldn't matter. I think you can blade just about anything if you really put your mind to it.

i would have two concerns, reaching the par 5's, and bunker shots out of steep faced bunkers. toss up between a 5 and a 6. would probably go with the 5 iron.

8 iron. When I was a kid a group of us junior members would go out once every couple of weeks and play 9 holes with just one club and I always took my 8 iron. I think the best I ever managed was a couple over and I'd never have more than about a bogey a hole averaged over 9 and it was a very long course.

Our club pro used to give all of the kids free lessons once a week and he was always going on about being able to hit all kinds of different shots with every club in the bag and the one club play was his way of getting us to be creative.

You'd be surprised just how well you can putt by blading a short iron.

I'll have to try this out!

Realistically if it is a long tough course then it would be any club that you can hit around 220-230, that is if you intend to make pars. Some do hit their 5 irons that far but for me it would have to be a Hybrid.

Two strokes of 230yds brings you on the green on the 460 yd monsters and anything less, the par 5's can be bumped and run onto in 3.

    • Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.
    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
