I must admit I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to collectable golf clubs, which is fine. If I like a club. I buy it and use it.
Thus, when I went to Golfsmith this afternoon, to look over simple blade back putters, I was pleased to see practically every manufacturer made their own version. I spent a great deal of time looking at the different blade putters and ultimately liked the Odyssey the best. At this point I looked at the price sticker on the shaft and was somewhat shocked to see $365. I then looked at all the other blade putters and also all the other Odyssey models and and everything fell into a price point of somewhere between $100-$175.
The sales guy informed me it was a limited edition putter and had “collector value”. A freakin’ Odyssey!? It was sitting there with the plastic pulled off the grip and put in the putting area with all the hundreds of other putters with no distinction what so ever.
I guess my question is this: is this a complete marketing flop by Odyssey/Callaway and will plummet in price in a year (think eBay)? So, I should just bide my time or should I jump on it before it’s gone? Bear in mind I have every intention of using it simply as a putter of which I like the feel and balance.
BTW, here’s the putter I’m talking about.

Odyssey Protype PT 82

Driver: Ping K15 10°, Mitsubishi Diamana Blueboard 63g Stiff
Fairway 4-wood: TaylorMade RocketBallz Tour TP 17.5°, Matrix Ozik TP7HD S shaft

Hybrids: Callaway Diablo Edge 3H-4H, Aldila DVS Stiff
Irons: MIURA PP-9003, Dynamic Gold Superlite S300, Sand Wedge: Scratch 8620 56°
Putter: Nike Method Concept Belly 44"
Ball: Bridgestone Tour B330-S

Never heard of that one having any value at all, and I ache for a Cameron Napa... A similar putter. Did Mickelson use that putter, or did they make a limited amount? What gives. Something seems odd....

A collectible I guess would be the limited edition of that putter that was released earlier in the year when Phil won the Masters. The sole logo is green in the limited edition one and red in the one that was recently released. This putter is suppose to represent the blade style putter Phil uses with the sight line that goes all the way through. I was actually interested in this but the fact that it's very unforgiving turned me off. Also, I think the loft on the putter is 4° where as the loft Phil's putter is around 5-6° since he holds the putter with a forward shaft lean.

Interesting info.

I distinctly remember the one I saw today had the red markings on the bottom. So the sales gimmick is this putter is kinda like the one Mickelson used to win the Masters, thus its a collectable? Sheesh. Just my luck it also happens to be the one that felt the best to me.

Let's just say that you'd better run back there and hope it's still there and keep a straight face when you're handing over the cash.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I don't think it will be much of collectible in my opinion. Odyssey does not have the crazy cult'ish following like Scotty Cameron. You sure can make it a collectible if you want it to be though. That would be a very nice piece to have.

Avoid it! It might be a solid putter, but changing the paintfill to green could be accomplished by my daughter, some paint, toothpicks, and nail polish remover. She's 12.

It appears the version with the green markings on the bottom, black grip and red face graphic is the one that is “rare”. I saw a price of $2K on the internet–yikes!? The model I was looking at with the white grip, red sole markings and single back graphic on the face varies in price all over the place. Ranging from $1,300 by some nut job on eBay to $299 at Edwin Watts. Nice putter, but I think I’ll let the nonsense sort itself out before I get one.

It even comes with a "wish I was am Cameron" headcover. Nice.

The overmarketing, overpricing and overhyping of putters is ridiculous. "His putter has a BLUE paint fill! What a loser!"

One of my favourite putters was a throw in when I bought a used set of irons off kijiji. I haven't seen any others like it, so maybe it's a collector's item?

It should go well with your driver-less, wood-devoid, and iron-free bag...

Yea, I have ProV1's

And I got my putter today

there are no words to describe how good it feels

I dunno if it's the fact it's 33", as I have always used 35"

but this honestly feels like an extension of my arm

IMO that's how a putter should feel

I'm so happy

That's funny. You'd think they'd make a lot of 33 inch LW putters that are a prototype of Phil's putter.

Says the guy with a white putter others might call overmarketed, overpriced, and overhyped. If you haven't got anything nice OR informative to say...

For the record, I'm in favor of people doing whatever makes them happy, particularly when it doesn't directly impact my independent ability to do the same.

    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
    • Day 291 6-22 full, faster swings, focusing on low point, missing towel. Recorded some face on and dtl. Practicing full speed changes is something I wasn't doing enough.
    • Day 2 (22 Jun 26) - used the clip the tee drill today - focused on picking the tee and then collecting the divot.  Hit a few hard foam balls later in the session.
    • Club of the week, my hybrid. Stripe show on every shot. This one was probably the best. About 240 to the green. The ball was on a severe upslope. I hit it just off the back of the green (like 1-ft.
    • That will sting for a long time. Had all the momentum in the world.  The on course heckling of WC a bit over the top. IMO, that may have even galvanized him. Kinda like RC. He may have picked up some sympathy too. So boo to the boos. I can't stand him (and it's not just the incidences) but I think when punishment outsizes the crime, the tide tend to turn. He has stuck to "I've earned the hatred" narrative. Smart kid.
