Citing serious concerns for the players's personal safety because of drug violence, the LPGA cancelled the Tres Marias Championship scheduled for April 21-24.

So now they have, what, four tournaments this year, and one of them won't pay them? :-P

Its a shame we are letting Mexico run the way it is, if I was a female, I wouldn't be caught dead down there either.

We have no right to tell Mexico how to run things.Β  Mexico isn't under the rule of the U.S.Β  The only thing we should be doing is protecting our borders and our citizens on U.S. soil.

Too bad but I can understand how the LPGA players feel. Β Mexico is probably doing about the best they can trying to bring the Drug Cartels under control. Β But in a third world country it is difficult for many reasons. Β Probably worth mentioning the market place is the USA and we have not been too successful in eliminating illegal drugs from our society either and we are not a third world country. Β So being overly critical of Mexico's efforts is hypocritical. Β If there was not a market in the USA, it would all go away.

Too bad. I like the LPGA allot. My young daughters who golf are always asking me why there aren't more girls on TV. I am stuck having to PVR every LPGA tournament so I can replay it for them another time (they are too young to know it is a repeat.)

Agreed. We can cancel tournaments and things like that (as the LPGA, not as the government of course), but what they do is their business, and what we do here is our business.

Too much worldwide enforcement. If another country affects us it's one thing. If they're busy shooting themselves, or stealing from themselves, or raping each other, or dealing drugs to each other, I don't really care.

Not to get political here, but the world is pretty interconnected now, one country going to sh*t effects other countries. I am not sure what the answer is but the option of ignoring what going in elsewhere in the world is not an option, however we seen how effective it is when you try to control what going on in another country.

Maybe the Mexican drug cartels and the LPGA should combine forces. This would alleviate the financial woes the LPGA is going through, and the cartels would be able to launder their drug money through a legitimate front company. The cartels could also secure a worldwide distribution network by having the ladies act as mules for their product – one could easily fit 4-5 kilos of yeyo in a staff bag.

some truth to this, i am all for live and let live.; i don't want to police Mexico but when the government can't stop a drug cartel it is because the govenment is on the take and doesn't want to stop it.

I might buy your argument if they were taking military action against us.Β  Since they aren't, you are just being silly.

Yes we shouldΒ protect our borders.Β  We are doingΒ a poor job of that now.Β  We need to beef up our border patrol.Β  Legalizing drugs wouldΒ help too.

Forgot to use multiquote, but I am quoting Lefty below:

It isn't our problem what happens on their side of the border.Β  Our involvement should end at the border.Β  There are thousands of governments on the take, including our.Β  Should we police all of them?

Legalize drugs? That'll be GREAT for the community...

This was the case with the PRI government that ruled Mexico for so many decades. The cartels were given strict rules about what they could and could not do in order to be left alone, and as long as they remained inside their boundaries everyone was happy. When the PRI was removed from power by the PAN, the new government did not accept those rules. The war on the cartels began and the result is this big mess.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. The Mexican cartels are starting operations in the NW forests. They're planting experimental plots of marijuana to see which ones can be found and which ones remain undetected. There are not enough law enforcement resources to find anywhere near all of them. The economics of the stuff is such that even if four are found and destroyed, the fifth one will still yield a generous profit.

When I go hiking, I occasionally come across former plots. You can tell by the agricultural paraphernalia that has been left behind. I pray I never came across a working plot, since it will be guarded by guys with guns. Not very nice guys with guns.

Like it or not, the Mexican drug trade does not respect the U.S.-Mexican border.

. . . but this is a golf forum.

Well then I guess we'll just continue to have our national forests destroyed, border trashed, innocent good mexican people terrorized, and Cartels making bank because YOU don't want to legalize things certain people are going to do either way. Good call. Oh no, now we've really gotten off topic..

Did the LPGA wake up one morning and all of a sudden realize there was danger in Mexico ? Why did they schedule an event there in the first place ? Even if the planning was done 3 years ago the situation was still unstable back then.

When a company makes a club in the USA I will proudly display their brand here. All of mine were made in china by somebody making $2 a day. Shame on you Mr club manufacture.

I suppose this belongs in the Grill Room but don't know how to transfer the quotes there. Β There is a good argument for legalization of some drugs. Β If you take the money out of the market the cartels will go away and legalizing drugs would likely do that. Β Most police will tell you that nearly 70% of the Nation's serious crime is related to illegal drugs one way or another. Β If you legalize drugs maybe we can get some control (like with booze) over the trade and even tax it. Β As long as people in the USA want the drugs and cartels can become as wealthy as small nations selling them it isn't going to go away. Β I can't remember how long the "war on drugs" has been going on but we are losing it if we have not already lost. Β We need to do something different from whatever it is we are doing now and legalization is one of the doable alternatives. Β The other alternatives I know of don't seem to be politically possible (like the death penalty or life without parole for people that sell illegal drugs to juveniles). Β That would certainly stop repeat offenders if nothing else.
