I guess it was those hard core golf fans!

Let's assume you meant the PGA Tour...

And guess what? They didn't make anywhere near as much money back then. They paid the winners less, the TV people paid less, advertisers paid less... They "stayed in business" because the business cost - and made - 10x (or whatever) less money before Tiger Woods (despite Greg Norman, Nicklaus, etc.).

They also didn't used to donate as much to charity as they do now.

That's not the point and you know it. If golf in the US drew soccer like ratings sponsorship would dry up and the Tour would be in big trouble. The point of this entire subthread is the PGA tour would be in trouble if only hardcore fans watched on TV. The advent of Tiger Woods has been huge for the game. This is proven by the size of the viewership, the huge purses and the worldwide interest. Why do you think Tiger is playing in the Middle East this week? They are paying him huge money to be there.

Good lord what is going to happen when Tiger retires. The PGA is going to shut down and golf courses are going to start closing down worldwide by the thousands. Well I say we have ~30 or so years to play so enjoy it while it lasts!

You guys do realize that Tiger hasn't played in this tournament since 2002, right?

He also played in Dubai 2006-2008 (and would have in 2009 and 2010 had it not been for surgery/personal stuff).Β He played Dubai 3 times has won twice, and his worst finish was T3. Granted, Dubai and Pebble aren't usually on the same week, but I think it's no surprise that Tiger skipped Pebble.

I thought I already posted something similar, but it disappeared in processing. He never plays the old Pro Am events (The Crosy and The Hope). As long as Dustin Johnson is in the hunt on Sunday at Pebble Beach, people will watch. Assuming the weather cooperates.

I think the media loves the underdogs and Tiger.Β  I saw a LOT of coverage on "two gloves."Β  I'd go as far as to say it was approachingΒ disproportionate.

Re: Tiger's decision to play in the desert,Β forΒ someΒ it depends on whether you want to find another reason to bash the guy.Β  The more talented field is in that tourneyΒ yet an early post hinted that Tiger was heading over there to avoid Phil ... c'mon.Β  As a fan of the PGA TourΒ it's a littleΒ disappointing, but as a fan of golf generally, I'm loving the prospect of seeing the top 3 in the world in the same group for 36 holes ... hopefully it's televised.

the bulk of the best players in the world are playing in the desert this weekend, and people still moan and whine that Tiger isnt playing at Pebble Beach?

Didnt see all the moaning when Mickleson was out in the desert the other week when he didnt even play well, o and the 1 mill appearance fee what he got.

and where are all the people from who are moaning about Tiger playing in the desert....

I personally cant wait for the tournie to start tomorrow morning at 6am on Sky in the uk, i think it will be a great weekend, and then 8pm tomorrow night for the Pro-am on the PGA tour is going to finish it off nicely.

Well, err, no actually I didn't.Β  How come you didn't post this earlier and save all the wasted electrons.

Take a look at tiger's second shot on 18, then to hole the putt for eagle shows signs of the Tiger of old.

Amazing finish, you could see at the interview afterwards he had confidence to go out and score well tomorrow, GL to him hope he gives us another good round to watch,

You MUST be out of your mind. Like honestly out of your mind. Tiger is the major reason that people watch golf NOW. There is a reason they have a BT and AT attached to golf termonolgy. (Before and After Tiger) He has changed this game forever. Longer courses, tougher courses, more workout involved... He single handedly put Nike on the map. This man is the reason that everyone watches golf.

You think with him OUT of the mix they will have MORE viewers?

You're COMPLETELY wrong.
