I don't understand why he would want to play in a pro-am, when he can play against most of the worlds top ten in the desert?

Woods: 71-66 at -7

Westwood: 69-70 at-5

Kaymer: 69-71 at -4

Good point.  I've changed my opinion since I learned about Dubai going on simultaneously and about who was playing there.

You can argue he wants to stack his game up against the best in the world.  So far he's doing pretty well with that in the desert.  Besides he could do with the cash ....

One other comment: his return to form (or not, depending ...) is mostly about GETTING THE FEEL, or the touch, back into his game.  He's obviously lost a lot if it and it's very frustrating for him (putting feel as well of course).  Yes I know hitting fairways is important but he's won too many events missing bunches of them (I've witnessed some spectacular misses on his part - no big problem for the guy really) for that to be the main issue IMO.  No, it's more about his ability to know deep down in his subconscious that he can work the ball in the air just right if he needs to, hit the right spot on the green with the right amount of spin, to come out of a greenside bunker JUST SO, stuff like that.

Just MO and feel free to differ.  When TW starts hitting the occasional shot like the one that sticks in my mind .... greenside bunker to a shortish pin on an away-sloping, fast green with a pond lurking at the bottom of the slope just off the edge .... then he's back in his old game.  He hit it perfectly, with backspin, for an up and down IIRC.  I honestly can't think of another player who would have seriously contemplated that shot, given the risks. It was a smart play (on the Sat or Sun IIRC) given the competitive situation and given his skill level at the time (I'm not saying he should just take more risks, obviously).  Now that's the TW of old, the one I'm waiting to see return.   And that takes supreme confidence in one's feel, or touch or whatever else you want to call it.

p.s Jack, who I followed a lot back in the day and is my idol in many ways, was more of a pure power player.  Not saying he didn't have feel, but IMO he didn't have the amazing combination of power and feel that TW had in his glory days, a combination which has made TW probably the greatest player of the game to date.

Damn the torpedos and bring it on man.  If you get it back, the current #s 1 and 2, excellent as they are, will be getting smaller in your rear view mirror.

Pro-Ams are boring. I'm not all that interested in 18 handicappers duffing around Pebble Beach. Euro coverage can at times be a snooze fest, but at least we get to watch the top three in the world.

Well, ahem, having been in that boat myself recently, I find it most reassuring to see that there are players who botched some of those spectacular holes even worse that I did.  As for some of the putting, I don't feel HALF so bad now.  Man but those greens are tough, the ball keeps breaking this way then that then the other (esp. since I was usually looking at a fairly long one first). And the weather has been glorious up to now, not like what I experienced.

But I hear what you're saying.  Think of it as light entertainment - and there's still the REAL golfers to watch.

It's well known that Jack did not have a strong wedge game. He was Tiger long for his day and hit high soft long irons. He was also the best clutch putter I've ever seen and (of course) as mentally tough as they come.

Woods in at par. Not bad, but one or two under and then I'd say that's two great consecutive rounds. I'd take par in that wind.

I don't think he'll win. Top 5. Maybe it was that blonde with the pink top and +1 handicap. :-)

A lot of guys went backwards today. At one back, I'd say par is a decent score.
