I just started playing after the offseason, and about halfway through my first large bucket, a blister formed on my finger and then broke and hurt like crazy. ... I'm wondering, is this normal for not playing for so long or is it something to do with my grip?

Blister or calluse? Blisters is not something you want, but calluses is common. It depends on your grip and swing style, no definitive guidelines really. I used to have some calluses, but some grip and swing changes lately has caused them to go away. Ben Hogan had calluses on both hands, so it's not necessarily a sign of something wrong. And again, blisters that become sore can be an issue. If you haven't gotten them before it could be that the hands need some time to toughen up, but it could also be that your swing and grip are a bit off after the layoff and need some time to get grooved.

Question 1,

How new are your grips?

Question 2,

How hard are you gripping the club?

New grips should not slip in your hands, which would cause blisters.. Also alot of grip pressure will increase friction as well..

Oh Dear God.  Get to an emergency room before your hand falls off.

Blister.  When you hit a lot of balls in succession early in the season, you can create blisters even on your right hand.  You can tell they are coming if your skin starts to get red at the pressure points.  You haven't built up calluses yet, so the top layer of skin lets go.

I keep flexible cloth bandaids in my bag to put over the pressure points if I am going to hit a lot of balls (I don't wear gloves anymore).  Another great tape to use is called "Leukotape" and can be found at health aid stores.  Physical Therapists use it because it is more flexible than regular athletic tape and will stay on longer.

The Leukotape works great.  If you don't like the feeling of tape, superglue works great.  Thats what I use and it works for me gives it a protective layer without feeling bulky.

I never get blisters on my right hand while golfing. Am I doing it wrong? I do have a callus on the inside joint of my left thumb and on my left hand where some skin gets pinched between the grip and my wedding band.

lol, I think it all matters on your skin and your swing. when I played golf when I was young my feet would get soo many blisters, I remember having these water filled blisters on my feet from walking the course in footjoys. Luckily it doesnt happen to me anymore

I used to get that as a kid too. Kids shoes are garbage, and you only get that one pair until it's worn out or too small.

Regarding blisters on the hands, some people get them and some people don't. I would say that if you don't "usually" get them and you start to, that something is wrong.

I guess you're just lucky or have great skin.  I don't get them very often.  Sometimes, if I do a lot of yard work, then go to the range they can pop up.  I will tape up before they tear.  I play without gloves and never get them during a round.

Ok.  I'll bite.  Which finger?  The only parts of the hands that should be actively squeezing are the last three fingers of the top hand and the middle two fingers of the bottom hand.  You should also have very slight pressure from engaging your pecs to squeeze them together some.  The weaker your hands are and the worse your swing is, the tighter your grip will get.  When your hands get strong you won't need to squeeze as hard to apply the same pressure.  Just like curling a 60lb. dumbell feels to a strong guy like a 30 feels to a regular guy.  It'll still be pretty damn strong, but you won't feel tension from it.  That's what you should set as a goal.  Go and hit the gym and do some work with those bars without gloves.  It will toughen your hands quite a bit.  I've lifted weights my whole life and I've never had a single blister from a golf club.  Golf grips are soft and supple compared to barbells.
