Not often true. For me (and most players in my experience), when the shaft is shallow during the backswing, it'll want to steepen during the transition and/or early downswing. Not everyone "Ray Floyd"s it.

Yeah, pretty confident in a "that's you" type of situation. I don't know what you mean by OTT (people have different definitions - and most PGA Tour pros swing over the top of their backswing plane with their hands/lead arm), particularly when you say you "OTT from the inside."

What type of camera are you using to get 300fps?  (Apologies if this is in the thread somewhere but I couldn't find it)

I've been using my iPhone at 240fps which is quite good but I'm interested to find out how hard it would be to get even higher fps.  I saw an app where they used a phantom to capture the swing slo mo shots which looked great but at $40k+ I guess it should be.

This video explains it. I've been told by several very good instructors that I work with (all MOrAD), that as my arms get deeper I won't do my right are down and back, especially if I get deep and come over and allow the wrist to down cock the club. This may just be me though.

Have you tried it? Watch the video and let me know your thoughts. When I start to get higher hands at the top, it hinders my pivot and I get tons of arm lift, which I hate.

It's a Casio FH-25 and it's actually just 240 FPS.

I occasionally shoot with my iPhone 6S too. It works really really well. I just don't often need the files to be full HD (and thus large file sizes).

I feel we're missing each other on communicating here.

My issues are:

  • Previously (still a little but, much less so) I'd let my right elbow get too deep around me and bend a bit too much. This has gotten much cleaner lately.
  • Previously (still a little bit, much less so also) I'd roll my forearms a bit and get under the plane at A2. That'd tip out from 3-4-5 and get steep.
  • Currently, my initial move on the downswing is to steepen the shaft while keeping my hands too deep.

I do that third thing whether my hands are deep or shallow. I'm looking to reverse that - I'd rather be a little steep and feel the shaft lay down. Yes, like Hogan (and the majority of other successful golfers), I want my hands to go OUT while the shaft lays DOWN.

I want the same thing lol. I over flex the arm in the backswing, then flex it more and it gets behind me.

I love Robert Rock's move from p4-p6

That looks decent.

This looks "okay":

56c92666bc2cb_Erik_DL50.thumb.jpg.ef54ca

In motion a bit like this:

Eh. The forearms still want to steepen out. I don't care that I hit this one a little on the toe - that's relatively easily fixed.

This is better, but it's still not super exciting to me.

I'm going to start experimenting with feeling NO folding back of my right wrist throughout the backswing, then feeling it lay down a little bit from there (probably with some right wrist folding in transition).

Analyzr Image Export.jpg

Even this "better" video still has too much, and the "laying down" is a bit more manufactured.

Finally starting to feel good about things. Here's a big part of the reason why.

Analyzr Sequence 50%.jpg

Here's more detail as to why…

01.jpg02.jpg

I still did this one a tad early (the transition from what feels like "flat" to what feels like cupped backward). So that's a good sign. I can flush it pretty good when I do this right.

Are you trying to line the club up with your hands at A6 instead of or is that just a function of what your working on?

Neither of those are at full speed. The swings that produced them (one with the Torq on) are here:

I think that one of the weirdest things is currently the feel that when I lay the club off slightly that it feels like the face is about 40-60° open. It's not, it just feels like it is. So I have to get over that a little bit.

Oh, and I cleaned up my head movement forward a little bit after recording this video. Always a little old piece that creeps in.

Working on the same thing as always.

Actually that's not entirely true. The backswing is way better. So is this:

I'm looking back in a mirror (a glass door). The grey at the bottom is the door handle on which I rested my phone. That's why it was blurry, too.

But hey, best swings EVER! :-)

Congrats!

I have a question - why are you trying to get the shaft more vertical in the backswing? I've seen you answer before that if it's flatter, you tend to then get a bit steep on the downswing. I guess I'm asking if that "laying down the club" move is hard to time. Your swing looked pretty awesome too before when the shaft was less vertical in the backswing.

Are you consciously dropping your right elbow down towards your waist on the downswing or is that a natural move?

I'll answer quickly (somewhat), and if you want more… just ask. Happy to answer. But don't want to bore you either if you just want a short answer.

Okay, so, players stove to get the golf club "on" plane. It may not be a great plane, but a club that's too steep or too shallow is going to try to get back to the plane the golfer wants. So if you're too shallow, you'll steepen the club at some point. Conversely if you're too steep you'll shallow it.

So, that's all I'm trying to do: go from steep to shallow (because I won't go steep to steeper - I'm not a hack). If anything I tend to be a teeny bit shallow in early transition, so it steepens slightly.

No. The only thing I'm trying to do in these swings is this:

Analyzr Image Export.jpg

However my body chooses to do it (so long as it's not by standing up and shallowing out my shoulders prematurely), I'm good with it.

P.S. A lot of the bit with the "steeper" has to do with how much and when my right wrist bends back on itself.

Thanks! So are you saying that players have a natural "plane" (good or bad) that they subconsciously try to get to in the swing?

No. Just that the hands and sweet spot can be on different planes during the slower parts of the swing, but when the speed kicks up they want to line up.

Swings:

  1. Thinned it a bit, shaft steepened a bit when I started the small pump into the downswing.
  2. Ditto. Plus not getting the weight forward too well, which leads to what you see next.
  3. Shaft still steepens. Of course, it almost has to, but see the note at the bottom. Flush, though, and a bitty draw. Not big enough, so I stress the feeling of keeping the forearms rotated a certain way on the next two swings.
  4. Face wide open (on purpose, see the forearms), basically open-face-shank the ball into the right net (not visible).
  5. Ditto.
  6. A good swing. A bit less steepening, arms stayed rotated how I wanted more, ball draw a fair bit.

Note:
The steepening in transition is something I may want to switch up. My new drills may be to stop at that "steep" spot in the backswing that you see here, then lay it down AS I start the downswing. Maybe laying it down way too much (as I'm doing here) is leading to steepening, naturally.

The club comes down on a good plane, but it's more about training my wrists and forearms to rotate the other way, and steepening is the opposite rotation of what I want. This is still a good drill, because I'm learning what it feels like to swing down more so on the plane I want, and also learning to trust that even though it feels like the club face is wide open (like 80°), the forces and torques naturally square the face up.

    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
