Ok so here it is. The nicest course in my area is offering a killer deal (Piper Glen). $999 for a 2 year pass/membership which includes unlimited golf, unlimited range, and an indoor putting facility. Here are the downfalls: the pass is walking only and this course is a bear to walk, most of my golf buddies play the munys, and if I get a membership here it would eat the rest of my golf budget so I would not be able to play much elsewhere.

In the end it would save me money, but I would also probably not be able to play with my friends although I rarely play with them as is. This course also has a mens league I would likely join. Help me out folks. Feel free to ask any questions.

I'd do it. If you don't play with your friends all that often anyway, maybe they'll bite the bullet a few times they can play with you at your course, and maybe you can bite the bullet and play the munis once or twice with them too.

It sounds to me like it's a no brainer if you are sure you can walk the course regularly for the next two seasons.  You don't play with your friends that often now as it is so that shouldn't factor too heavily into your decision making process.  Who knows, maybe some of them will hear about the deal and decide to join along with you.  I don't think you'll regret committing to play at a nice track though.

You said you don't play with your friends that much anyway, once you get to the course with your membership and in the league I'd assume you'll make new friends.  The indoor putting green would be the big reason for me.. free putting practice all year is something I wish I had access to.

Dilemma!? Thats a $500 seasons pass to all the golfing/practice you can handle! Even if you do start playing with other singles/doubles. Youll meet nice people and enjoy your round just as much than if you were with your friends. Also, you wont have to put up with any of your regular golfing buddys bad habits every round. Youll get to meet new people and mix it up. Plus, I play better golf with a stranger because i dont want to look like an idiot by gambling on overly risky shots lol. If there was a deal like that in my area id never leave the course. My girlfriend would be PISSED!

+1 :)

Actually, I think $500 a year is a bargain, at least it would be here in Austria (if it's an 18-hole course).

And "walking only" is the only way I play this game ;)

$500 a year?  Go for it.  I'm trying to decide if $4,200 a year at my local course is worth it.....

I would sign up for that price in a second. The walking will only get you fitter! I only walk unless I'm forced to ride like in Hawaii or Vegas.

Thanks for all the responses! The putting green is a huge +. The only downfall is this track is huge and really tough to walk but you guys are doing a great job of convincing me. I forgot to mention it gives me full access to another course I've never played that is about 30minutes away. This course got 4 1/2 stars from Golf Digest and was on thier "Good Value", "Good Service" and "Good Condition" awards list.

The fact that you haven't done this yet is offensive! haha...What are you waiting for?

If the course is the "nicest in your area," your friends would surely be happy to come in as guest with you to play once and a while and if you join the mens league, you'll find playing partners to play with anyway.  Get"R"done..

I took advantage of this deal last fall. It really is a no-brainer incredible deal. The OP is right, it is the nicest course in the area (haven't played either of the country clubs) and the toughest (rating is 72 from the blues and 74 from the tips IIRC). Playing this course I know will make me a better golfer. Either that or I'll get so frustrated I'll quit (yeah like that'll happen). I'd like to get in the league too, but right now I work evenings so that probably won't be possible.

I've probably already used around $600 worth of that $999 between the course, range, and indoor facility (which BTW is not only just for putting practice. You can hit full swings and chip also).

I looked at the city course pass and Lincoln Greens. Either of those was going to cost me at least $600/year as I'm outside the city limits, and that didn't include the range or indoor facility.

I personally hate taking a cart and only do this for outings or when I play with one of my lazy friends -) so that wasn't a consideration for me. You'll have to decide that. The course is a hike, can't BS you on that (a lot of distance between some of the holes) but you get used to it.

If you plan to play a reasonable amount of golf over the next two years in this area, I can't see how you wouldn't do this. If you do, then maybe we can get together for a round.

Sounds like a great deal.  If walking is a bear get a pull cart - that will reduce the exertion level.  I'd love to have an opportunity like that - lowest around my area is $1200 per year - and not nearly as many amenities.  Go for it - you'll make a lot of new friends and have plenty of folks to golf with.

Mship - It's nice to hear from someone who has done this exact deal. Mind if I ask a few questions? How hard is it to walk on (tee times a must)? What is the staff like?

I assume you're dilemma is deciding between using a check vs credit card? It depends. Do you get bonus points for using your credit card? If not, I'd just use a check so you don't have to remember to pay off the balance at the end of the month. ;-)

    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
    • Day 23 - 2026-01-12 Finally outdoors again with 10 minutes of 7 iron work in the net. Also mirror work. Excited to get back on the range tomorrow and maybe do some film.
    • Day 10: 2026.01.12 Hit 25 balls at the range, working on rotating right hip during backswing.
