Not to beat a dead horse, but we've seen McIlroy get off to a start like this twice in the last three majors. He has to prove he can hold himself together for the next three days.

TV did him no justice with some of the up and downs he made. Phil will need a decent round tomorrow to stay close to the leader but I'm guessing a lot of the top guys will come back to the field over the weekend. If anyone is wondering after a few holes I made sure to not stand down the left side when mickelson was teeing off.

His 74 today could easily have been an 84. Not sure if that bodes well or poorly for the last three days...

yeah... that's what really bugs me about phil and the reason i never really root for him. he hits these miraculous shots to get up and down, but he does the stupidest stuff to put himself there in the first place. it's like he's a masochist or something. i wouldn't be surprised if bones were on blood pressure meds the way phil plays. watching phil play is like watching a comedy of errors.

I sincerely hope McIlroy remembers his Haiti trip throughout the tournament as it seems to have made him realise that his game of golf is not a life or death situation and he needs to relax with it.

I was there on Thursday, what a great experience.  One comment on 18- good drive and it's a playable hole.  Miss the fairway and it's next to impossible to hit the green on your next shot.  I saw a ton of layups.  And the flag was in the easiest location on Thursday.  If they move it up and god forbid, tuck it back left, it's going to be a fun weekend.

    • How do you like the maxfli's? (Which ones?)
    • I am using up my Taylor made distance balls. Went thru half of my tp5’s. Prolly finish the season with axt titliest. But not buying any. I still have a few hundred maxfli balls in my safe.
    • Well you were certainly right about this. Didn't notice much difference from when I switched to the e12's from the Kirkland balls. But today when I first tried the Vice Pro's, wow noticeable difference. Longest drives I've had so far and I think I need to club down on iron shots with it. Kept overshooting the green with them. Great feel and sound too.
    • My boss, out of the blue yesterday, asked me if it ever gets too hot for me to play. I've played in 112* in Phoenix before. Fairly frequently play in mid-90s in NY. Those days are worse than the 112 in Phoenix. I said no. But I'll play in anything. I've played in sleet, snow, hail (one time it hailed on us while blowing a steady 45mph gusting to 55mph - as verified by an anemometer in the clubhouse), torrential rain, high winds, cold, hot, you name it.  Lightning will get me off the golf course though. I'm not an idiot (well, not that much of one anyway).
    • I'm an all weather golfer. Luckily in my part of the Bay Area, it never get's much hotter than mid-70s, and the only humidity fog, so I don't have to deal with hot and humid weather. Most of the year I only have time to play once a week, and it's my weekly psychological break from the daily experience of work/parenthood so I hate to miss it. The only thing that really gives me pause is high winds, because my home course has tons of trees, and quite a few are diseased/dying. Often times when I am out playing and the weather is really shitty I will momentarily question my decision to play, but I rarely regret it.
