Starting last Sunday, I developed an unknown illness that clogged my throat, put unbalanced pressure in my ears, and congested my nose.  Tuesday was the only day of the summer my ma could take off to go golfing with me and my dad, so of course, I just had to go.  No amount of sickness was to stop me, or so I thought... My swing was weak and my body not as flexible and my overall state slowing down every hole.  By the time I got to the 15th hole, I couldn't look at my ball throughout my swing without it hurting, so I had to really rely on what I know my swing can do.  My putting was not as great as it could be, but all in all, I still scored pretty good considering my unknown condition.  I had shot an 81, par 71 and 6400yds.  I went home, my temperature was 104°F and I went straight to the doctor, eventually to figure out I had Mono since Sunday....  That was the worst illness I've played in.

What's yours?

Good for you. gotta keep living life... My new hip is in the surgeons office. I've seen my handicap climb from an 9 to a 16 and my 150 club go from a strong nine to a hard 6. Its getting done over thanksgiving week and I hope to back swinging by end of winter. Right now my motto is 'better life thru chemistry.'

Something wrong with lower spine. So painful I had bruising on my skin on my lower back right where it hurt. I could only bend over to putt for max 3 seconds, so I putted terribly and swinging was extremely painful.

Still pops up every now and then ( right now there is bruising but very minimal )

Should go get an X-Ray eh....

I spend a lot of time driving and really messed up my back for a few weeks. It was so bad I was struggling to get out of my car to make sales calls. Ended up playing 2 rounds that weekend - it's amazing how those heating pads can make the pain more than bearable.(for a few hours anyway)

I broke my left wrist making a swing at my ball in deep rough on the 4th hole.... finished the remaining 14 holes and beat the guy I was playing with (a business associate of my wife's), despite the pain (didn't know it was broken till I saw the doctor the next day).  He is still looking for a rematch, but since he lives in Houston, we haven't been able to find an opportunity to play again.

Doctor thinks a small bone in my right hand is broke.  There isn't any swelling, but the pain when someone shakes my hand or I hit a golf ball fat is pretty intense.  I have to go for x-rays next week, but told the doctor I'll deal with the pain as long as I can't mess up the hand long term.  I'm just starting to see decent results and don't want to be in a cast for weeks or longer forcing me to miss a summer of golf.  I broke my leg during a football game in h.s. (hairline fracture, nothing big) but played in two more games before I bothered going for an x-ray to find out it was broke.

I had tumor taken out of my right index finger on december 9th and tried to play on new years eve. Although the doctor told me once the stitches come out I can go back to doing anything I feel like he was wrong. It was a lot of pain and I ended up having to use my pain medication after the round it hurt so bad. I shot a smooth 84 putting was about the only thing I could do without pain.

I"ve got two bad discs in my lower back ... never bothered me all that much until I took up golf last fall.     I've been playing twice a week - beating me up pretty bad, but I gotta keep playing if I want to improve & I really do enjoy it, so the pain is worth it.

    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
