So first off, I'd like to say this thread is a completely different topic than the "let other people try your clubs" thread.

I'm getting my paycheck in tomorrow, and I'm getting ready to play my first 9 holes of golf since I quit approx. 10 years ago. There is a golf course literally within a mile of my house, and I am planning on taking my dad out to play with me (on my money).

Apparently there is an incredibly ridiculous rule at this course that you can't share your golf set with a playing partner (your partner has to play with his/her own set). I have no idea why anyone would think up such a stupid rule.

Does your course(s) have a rule like this?

Do you agree it's a terrible rule?

This is a common policy at most courses. The reason is pace of play. It would waste a lot of time having to share clubs. Other than on the tee, any time you both had to use the same club (like if you were approximately the same distance from the green) you'd have to wait for the other person to hit, then wait for them to bring the club over to you. It may not seem like it would be an issue, but it is.

It is a common rule and normally I'd say its silly to think you COULD share clubs and I'd say if you don't have a set, get one or borrow from another person

this sounds like more of a "just this once" thing with your father and in that case I'd say you should try to scrounge together whatever clubs you could and sling them in a bag and head off to the course.  If he needs one of yours, then let him fire away.  Just be sure to let any approaching groups through if you're playin slowly.

Okay, I understand that point. But when I buy a golf set, and my dad doesn't have one anymore, how am I supposed to take him out to golf?

If you buy yourself a baseball glove and a ball, and your dad doesn't have his anymore, how are you supposed to take him out to the park to throw some balls?

=> he has to borrow one or buy one for himself, it's just that easy...

If it's just for one round, maybe you have some friends who own some old set, they don't use anymore and would be willing to lend to your dad?

The same rule is in effect in clubs around here, but most of the time, it's possible to borrow one from the club... even a halve-set would suffice, I suppose...

Yeah. We'll see. I might just have to go by myself. My problem is that in all the people I hang out with or see on a regular basis, I'm the only one with a golf set, so I can't really go with any of them with this rule. My uncle who lives a half hour away has a set, but I don't think we're gonna make that trip just for the set. I remember a few weeks ago before I bought this set I was looking for someone to borrow a set from, and I couldn't find anyone. Life sucks I guess.

You could always ask if they will make an exception - especially during an off peak time. I was once paired with a father and son that shared a set (8am on a saturday) They didnt slow us down, but they also knew when to pick up or drop with the other on a hole.

I have a similar issue when my father-in-law visits and wants to play golf as I only have my set and he won't carry his on public transport. Sometimes if you're playing at a quiet time and you ask ahead of time they'll allow it.

Plus some courses have clubs to rent. Worth asking.

Why do you think it's a terrible rule? It makes perfect sense. I'm yet to go to a golf club that doesn't have this rule.

How are you supposed to take your dad out to golf? Well, if he doesn't have a set of his own (or a set he can borrow), why should he expect to be able to play golf?

You may think it's a harsh rule...but it's a fair rule.

Does the golf club have clubs for hire?

Get yourself a set, buy a second cheap bag, take half your clubs and put them in the second bag. Voila! two (sort of) sets for the price of one!

You can pick up a cheap set for under $20 put em away until you need them.  Better still play golf with other golfers.

Simple, when you buy a golf set don't sell his! Then you will have 2.

No I don't agree.  I've never played a course which didn't require that each player has his own set of clubs.  That is just a given any place I play, public or private.  My home course has a dozen rental sets, including a couple of left hand sets, just to deal with that issue.  We won't allow anyone on the course without his own clubs, and if he somehow manages to slip past the starter and tee host, the ranger will escort him from the course, or take him to the shop to rent a set.

It has already been mentioned but go buy a cheap piece of shite golf bag and throw some of your clubs in it.

Then you;re good to go.

That, or rent, which isn't very expensive.

I've shared my set once, but it was at a cheap par-3 course and it was just with my sister. There was no pace of play issue there because on the tee it didn't matter, and around the greens I just gave her my SW and her putter. On a full course I can see how pace of play would be an issue though. If you are just going to play every once in a while, a cheap set is not that expensive, and many courses also offer rentals.

Doesn't just about every golf course allow you to rent clubs and have sets available?  There you go...

Give him your even clubs and you play the odds and buy a 5 dollar putter at goodwill. Now you have 2 sets......

I recently had the same issue when I wanted to play an unexpected 9 holes with my brother and I had left my clubs at home several thousand miles away.  I just grabbed half of his irons, no woods, no putter.  I stuck a few balls and tees in my pocket and walked the course carrying the clubs in ym hand - without a bag.  It was no problem aside from some funny looks.

    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
