I've decided to put in a thread wherein people compare their average shots with what club. Now, I'm going to immediately call "Bullshit" on someone who claims they hit their drives "300 yards", because I've seen so many people claim it, and then they hit one that goes like...half that. Be honest, take the average of your shots, not the best of 10. If you miss, how do you usually miss, and what happens?

I'll go first.

Driver : Just got this about 2 weeks ago. If I nail it on the screws, I've killed shots about 270 down the middle (average: 250-ish) . 9 out of 10 times when I hit any of my clubs on the sweet spot, I'll have a draw, probably because of my strong grip. I take this club way past parallel, which is what I think gives me the range (up until a month ago I could barely drive 200).

If I miss, most often I'll come in too steeply on it trying to kill the ball, end result is a massive push-fade that usually flies out of bounds or a mile into the woods. Occasionally, I hit it thin and pull it, but then it also fades...so no harm done, 200-220 yards, in the fairway.

3 Wood : If I don't top the damn thing (I can't count how many times I kill the driver on a par 5 down the middle, then pull out the 3-wood and top the thing 10 feet), I'll usually slice it, 200-230 yards. I've flown the green from 210 yards, and landed on the next tee box (about 240) but I think that was a fluke.

5 Wood : I'll hit this about 200, maybe a bit more if I catch it good. Unlike the 3 wood, I don't top this nearly as often--but my shots are still usually pushed off to the right.

3 Iron : This club gets me out of a lot of trouble that my wild tee shots usually land me in, especially on longer holes. I can hit greens like a surgeon from 180+ yards, if I hit it out in the fairway, I'd wager 190. If I miss, it's usually a chunk...this applies to all of my irons. From the 4 Iron down to the pitching wedge, just subtract 10 yards for each club, and I have pretty much the same result (the misses are usually a chunk or fat shot).

However, sometimes with my shorter irons, from 7 on down, I have tendency to skull it as well. The pitching wedge is my second favorite club, after the driver, probably because I'm good at it. Of all my golfing buddies, I'm pretty much the only one who is almost guaranteed to hit a green from 50-150 yards. (Chipping is another story...we're all prone to skulling it and watching in frustration as the ball dribbles off the other end.)

I've havent had to hit the sand wedge hard yet on the course so I don't know my range, but on the driving range it'll go up a mile and out about 80 yards.

Shots from crappy lies, or from the sand, I usually have to club up one, sometimes two clubs. If it's plugged, my only chance is the sand wedge, reguardless of how far I am from the hole. From the deep rough, I'll club up two, sometimes three (Lost a brand-new Pro V1 to a lake, then I learned my lesson). I never "80 percent" my shots like people say to do, since that will land me short, in the greenside bunker. For every shot that's over, there's six that's not up...I'd rather be over in most cases.

Also, I've driven almost 150 yards with a putter before.

"Shouldn't you be going faster? I mean, you're doing 40 in a 65..."

Driver : I can plan on 260-270 pretty reliably. I've hit them 320 on level ground (albeit with a firm kick) before, but that's a rare occurrence. Last week I hit two that topped 290 and I was pleased as punch with them.

3 Wood : 230-235, depending on the shot. I like to draw this one, but when I do that I usually ease up a bit anyway. Today I hit one 260 with a little cut. Not enough of a cut, though, as I found myself pin-high left of the green in a little collection area. I usually hit it a little further from the fairway. Less backspin.

5 Wood : I don't have one. I have a 17° Titleist 585.H hybrid. I plan to hit it about 215-220, but I can add 10-20 yards to that if I must. It goes a bit higher than the 3W, obviously, but I can hit down on it a bit more if I need a little extra juice.

3 Iron : 210
4 Iron : 200
5 Iron : 185
6 Iron : 170
7 Iron : 155
8 Iron : 140
9 Iron : 125
PW : 110
SW : 90
LW : No idea. Probably 65 or so. I never hit this with a full swing.

For the driver, I usually have mostly carry. 10-15 yards of roll, tops. For the 3W on up, the numbers quoted are carry. My ball usually doesn't go very far forward or backward anyway.

Driver: Average about 260-270. I've popped some 290's when I catch it just right, but I usually play a high fade that doesn't get much roll, so I rarely get it running.

3 Wood: 240-250

5 Wood: 220-230

Hybrid: around 210-215 on average

4-iron: 200
5-iron: 190
6-iron: 180
7-iron: 170
8-iron: 160
9-iron: 150
PW: 110-140 (my most versatile club, distance-wise)

SW: 100-110
LW: 80-90 (I rarely full-swing my lob wedge, though)

Putter: anywhere from 2ft shorter to 3ft longer than I want it to go.

I am waiting for you to call bullshit but I do hit the driver around 300 yards average. In my defense, I did compete at the Pinnacle exceptional driver contest finals in Laughlin, Nevada last year and hit 9 out of 13 measured drives over 320. And that was with my regular length Ping G5 driver.

So here it goes: Driver: 300 yards or so. I get invited to a lot of scrambles because of this. 3 Wood: 265 yards or so. Maybe a bit farther off a tee. 2 iron hybrid: 250 yards This is my club I use when I have to be in the fairway. 3 iron: 235 yards 4 iron: 215 yards 5 iron: 200 yards 6 iron: 190 yards 7 iron: 180 yards 8 iron: 167 yards 9 iron: 155 yards P wedge: 145 yards s Wedge: 125 yards tops Lob Wedge: 100 yards tops because I do not ever go full out hitting it. Mind you I do live at altitude so maybe a 1/2 club less at sea level. My driver distance is not all that affected though as my distances at Laughlin were at 500 feet or so above sea level.

Best thing I ever got was a range finder because it really helps to drill down the distances at the range.

Not as long as Id want to be. I've been working out 4 days a weeks for the last month so i hope that translates into a few more yards. If we're talking dry, spring, summer conditions..

Driver- Its not uncommon for me to hit a 300 yarder or 2 during a round if the fairways are firm. average around 260-270 due to consistency/accuracy issues.

3 wood- Im taking it out of my bag because the launch is too low off the deck. goes around 240-250 (on the screws)

5 wood- this is my favorite club in my bag, I can nuke it 240.

5 iron- 185 with my 690.cb's. They're a club shorter than alot of the irons ive played. 10 yard gaps, inbetweens most clubs.

Everything depends on whether I'm hitting off of a tee obviously, and if we're couting roll on the long to mid irons. These are basic distances though.

I know somebody is going to call bullshit on this so let me explain before I ever start with distances. I played tennis and baseball in highschool. I was a "power hitter" in both sports and they both require the same fast hands and timing as golf. Because of those "fast hands" my misses tend to be snap hooks and I have been working with a pro to slow my self down and drop a club or so for distances. I used to hit a PW anywhere from 120 to 160, which makes it hard to hit many greens. So here are my new distances. Feel free to call bullshit if you want. Also these are at my elevation of 3800 ft. I lose a full club or so at sea level.

Driver: 300 avg. I have driven a few par fours that measure closer to 340.
3 wd : 275 I almost always play this off the tee unless it's an open par 5
5 wd: 260 my most consistant club off the tee. nice high draw that usually finds fairway.
3 ir: 250 (I know, call bullshit)
4 ir: 235
5 ir: 220
6 ir: 200
7 ir: 185
8 ir: 170
9 ir: 155
PW: 140
54': 120
LW: 100

I know I'm going to have people calling me a liar, but I'm pretty sure I'd say I was better than a 9.6 handicap if were making it up. My problem is that inside 100 yards what do I hit? That's what the local pro and I are working on is slowing down the iron swings and controling the distance better to be more consistant.

Yes I can hit if farther using driving range distances, but I have made a real effort to establish my distance at effort levels I am comfortable with on the course. I feel knowing your carry and maximums is more important than average. Trouble behind the green Pin at 120 I will go with the 9I, trouble in front with 110 yard carry to a 120 yard pin I will hit the 8.
