Yes, I'm a fan of match play. here's why I think it would make a great PGA/LPGA event.

I know the first argument is men and distance off the tee. but lets face it. There are only about 5 PGA players that are Consistently Long AND Straight off the tee. the majority of LPGA players are shorter in distance but consistently in the fairway. so the split there is 60/40. This turns into fairway then green play, where skill not distance rules and often times wins tourneys. Since it's only 18 not 54, the energy and intensity level will be up.

Play hard and good for 18 or go home. Aside from the driving distance mismatch, the flat stick and keeping it fair, has and will be the big decider.

32 PGA, 32 LPGA pairings should be a lottery (ie, pick a number, you might get a PGA/PGA match up or coed. Matters not, game on.

I think it would make for great golf and be great for fans of both associations.

Note, not trying to start an argument, just my thoughts on the possibility of seeing some great golfers from both associations go head to head.

I would think that there would be zero interest in watching men play v women.

What would be the reason for it?

One thing that is certain is that the players wouldn't be interested.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

You're vastly under-estimating how much farther men hit the ball than women.

Quite honestly you'd see players with seven or eight club differences into the greens. Men would be hitting wedges and women would be hitting 3-hybrids.

A men-women match play would be boring as heck, and nobody would stand to gain anything by it. The men wouldn't want to risk losing to the women and the women would get creamed.

Just had my wife and several other golfing friends agree with your third point.  Well here's a thread headed for the waste bin.  Thanks for the reply

I think it would be decent to watch an alternate shot format. Pga player teams with a lpga player and they compete against another man/woman pro team. Alternate shot.

nike sq dymo str8 fit 9.5º  stiff
cobra baffler 3 wood stiff / cobra baffler 18º hybrid stiff
cobra sz irons stiff (soon to be bridgestone j33)
Cleveland 52, 56, 60 cg14
odyssey 2 dot putter / taylormade penta tp, prov1, callaway hx tour (have a few boxes of each from the past couple seasons)

They already do a PGA/LPGA team event, with a Champions tour player as a 3rd member. Everybody plays from different tees, IIRC. Could do the same thing with a man vs woman event as the OP proposed (that is, men play from longer tees than women to even things up.)  Personally I think it would be interesting.  "Battle of the Sexes" types of events are not unprecedented.

I think a tournament with a 32-man bracket and a 32-woman bracket (separate) might work, but I don't think any of these options are better than the current one.

In my bag:

This... Plus none of the top players from the PGA would play in it so there would be nothing to gain for anyone including sponsors.

Make it 50k to show up, 100k if you win the first match, 200k second, and a million if you win the final I bet a bunch of the top guys would give it a whirl. Obviously coming up with a 10 million or so purse would take some work.

From a fan standpoint it might be fun to watch as a one day tournament, but for the PGA and LPGA players I can't either one being thrilled with it.  The women don't want to be shown up by the men, and the men won't want to be in a situation where they hit a drive shorter than a woman.

There's a reason why the WNBA and NBA all stars don't compete.  Tennis has tried it a few times with Bobby Riggs and Jimmy Conners.  I think most recently, the Williams sisters challenged any male pro outside the top 200 to a tennis match and lost 6-1, 6-2 to 203rd ranked Karstan Braasch.

I do like the alternating shot format, that would be more fun and would not as threatening to either side.

Maybe some but I still don't think it would draw many of the top players since you pretty much get a million for winning any tournament. 50 to 100k wouldn't be much to draw guys that are already bringing home 15+ million a year. Plus I'm not sure money would be the main factor a lot of the top players don't show up but more of the fact they have nothing to gain from it.

Change it to 5 million (from 2 ) for the win if that makes you feel better about the numbers. The point is golfers will do stuff for cash which is why you have guys jetting around to asia in the fall every year. Make it a big enough TV event and their sponsers will ask them to show up. Heck award world golf rankings points if you want.

Personally I think it would suck. When a woman won everyone would say it is because of the shorter tees.

If they're going to ignore the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii they aren't going to play in a tournament against women. No point. And, because there'd be no interest, who's putting up the money anyway? Where's the return on their investment? The LPGA is losing tournaments and there are problems with PGA tour sponsorships, so it's not going to happen.

Once again....why would it be interesting?

It's a no win situation for the men and women.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
    • Here is a description of all the programs:  Programs & Training Programs and Training TheStack is a personal swing-speed trainer for golfers. Initially, each golfer is piloted through a series of swing speed tests to generate a force-velocity profile of their current swing. Qualitative data is... I think cruiser is meant for maintaining speed and flex can do more than that. But I'm just basing that on the descriptions that I linked.
    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
