Hey guys, I have been having a lot of trouble hitting my irons with any sort of distance consistently so that is my main thing to try and fix however I am open to any and all advice as I really do want to get better. Thanks!


I don't have the ability to watch your video in slow motion. But, there are a few things that you can see if you take a look at these videos a few times.

On the top video: At address you are too close to the ball, not enough flex in both legs. As a result your swing is to vertical.

To fix this is fairly simple - you have to adjust your setup (address).  Move further away from the ball about 6 inches (or more) - flex both legs more at this point, bend more at the waist.  From this position, you will be able to bring the club back to the top of your backswing without moving your head up and down (because you will have a nice centered pivot). You will also be able to do this without bobbing your head up and down - which is very evident between 17 and 21 seconds on the top video.

The second thing is a little more tricky - it is the most common swing fault - coming over the top (google it). Simply put, when you begin your move back to ball - you need to start with your lower body in order to return the club to the ball from the inside. In the videos you give a slight twist of your upper body before your bellybutton begins its rotation back toward the target.

Depending on what your hands are doing at impact you would usually just pull it low and left or hit it short and right. If your divot points left of your aimpoint and the ball goes to the right, that will confirm the over the top move.

Some people think about having a little bellybutton bump toward the target to initiate your swing from the top and that helps.

I would put a plastic sand bucket upside-down about two and a half feet behind the ball so that the edge of the pail that is closest to your toes at address is in line with the ball. From your corrected setup, bring the club back and inside the bucket and try to hit the ball without hitting the bucket. This may freak you out if have been coming over the top a lot and have never confronted it before.

That should help you get better contact and more consistency.

If it doesn't help at all, then you must be special

I tried this yesterday with a range bucket instead of a sand bucket, and I saw some quick results, but I had to put the bucket a little closer than 2 feet. Now, I just need to work on grooving that so when I go out on the course I can have the right feeling. Also looking for some more drills, etc. to help with hands in front and swinging in to out. Thanks!

I love the plastic bucket idea - as it allows you to truly feel the proper swing - coming from the inside and swinging down the target line.

I don't get online all the time, but will look for your new videos.

Well, didn't have the best day today, thought I was making progress on the range but then during my round I couldn't get it.  Here are some vids I had my buddy take for me on the 8th. It's a 7 iron. I can tell my swing plane is way to flat and that it almost looks like I'm not using any arms in my swing. Once again, any help is appreciated. Also wondering if this video would be of good enough quality to use with Evolvr as I was thinking of signing up for their services but wasn't sure about the video quality needed. Thanks!


First video with the new camera, I've been working on some S+T basics this week in hopes to get better, was looking for some feedback on if I'm doing it right and what I can do to keep improving, I think I def. see a big difference between this swing and the one I uploaded last time. I think I've made some good improvements, and I'm really excited about being able to use the slow motion video to help analyze my swing. Hoping to open an Evolvr account later this month. mvmac is the expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express a few weeks ago, so I will tell you what I see.

You need to first work on the backswing. The first piece is working on a Rickie Fowler type backswing where the hands move in and you will have the clubhead feel like it is left behind. Screen shot 2012-03-17 at 8.54.20 AM.png

Also note how his clubface is square to the arc. You open yours and then it is REALLY open on the downswing which makes you flip the clubhead to square it.

One thing I do hope that mvmac (or others) comments on is your right foot in the dtl swing. I am interested in why that happens. Of course it is exaggerated because you don't have golf shoes on but I have a similar problem so I will be interested to hear what is happening there.

That makes a lot of sense about it being open because I often shoot a real low one straight off to the right. Will start working on that in my takeaway and backswing.

WAY, way too much head movement down and forward in the backswing. A TON less "crunching" of the left side. Your right foot slips because there's almost NO weight on it at even A4.

Head even continues forward on the down swing.

You need to do a lot of work on Key #1: Steady Head .

iacas, I was wanting to ask if you think the video quality is good enough for me to be able to do the Evolvr video lessons or if the quality isn't good enough for it to be analyzed well enough for the lessons. Thanks!

Plenty good enough. High framerates (to about 200+) trump resolution every time so long as resolution is reasonable .

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone again for the replies. I have been working on the things aforementioned and have shot consecutive rounds under 100!

Just joined Evolvr!!! Will keep everyone updated with my swing when I start getting some analysis back and begin to "Evolve"! haha
