I suspect that most of the negativity about this sponsorship is that 5 hour Energy seems like a sham - though it is just basic ingredients that don't pose any more of a health hazzard than energy drinks.

Does the PGA have any sponsorship guidelines?

Is it possibble that someone could be sponsored by Haamas or a Neo-Nazi organization?

Maybe Viagra could sponsor a senior tour guy...obviously he would need to be a big hitter with stiff shafts, not a Pavin type...which reminds me of the time I tried Viagra and it accidentally got stuck in my throat..I had a stiff neck for hours!

How come Tiger gets a pass on Fuse Science, which is basically 5 Hour Energy plus lots of pseudo-scientific bullshit?

Also, Perky Jerky.

Viagra missed their best marketing opportunity ever when they were involved with NASCAR and didn't have Dick Trickle drive their car.

Or the guys who endorse the Bill Engvall's signs bracelets? Lots of guys endorse lots of junk, and individual sports allow the most opportunity. I'm not sure I'd turn down a dumptruck full of money to change the logo on my shirt.

I think Avodart would have been a better marketing opportunity for Dick Trickle.  "I told my doctor I have a going problem, he said I have a growing problem"

Just call me FATHER Mike, Old fashoned. I have no hate for anyone. I just don't like to see the golfers of today take on the look of a NASCAR driving suit with logos on every square inch of fabric.

I logo or 2 on a shirt very tastefully done is fine Jims latest apparell with the 5 hour energy logo plastered al over his hat and shirt are the closest I have ever seen to NASCAR. some highlight film 20 or 30 years from now will take on a very strange look. Look at the way Woods dresses, TW on his hat a swoosh here and there and thats it. He will not have to look at clip 25 years from now and explain  what is that ad on your hat for??? and bless you my son....

All of the Nike staff players dress very plainly; it's a requirement when signing with that team. Even having additional logos on the bag requires advance permission (such as when Tiger had AT&T; or Anthony Kim with RBC).

ConsumerLabs testing showed they have about 200mg of caffeine, about the same as 2 cups of coffee.   You want to outlaw contestants having coffee with their breakfast too?

If he could knock a few minutes per hole off his putting routine, the 5-hour version might be enough.

Speaking of taking forever on a read... Why doesn't the PGA institute a shot clock like in the Basketball/Football?  Once it is their turn, they have like 60 seconds to read the putt and make the stroke.  It is awful how long some of these guys (Furyk included) take to read a damn putt.  Like Stricker on 18... Today Junior!!

The painful part about Stricker's was how badly he missed his putt after all of that.  I mean, he was, what, 8 feet left of the hole?

Yes.  And 8ft is being generous.  You'd think they'd rolled the rock on that green many times.  I can't believe he misread that putt as bad as he did.

    • So here’s the thing, you’ve treated the bunker as if it were GUR, which would actually be the appropriate course of action except you and your playing partners are not authorized to determine that for yourselves. The Committee in this case would be the golf course and in an ideal world, they would have handled their responsibilities and told you at the beginning of the round that X bunkers are under water, treat them as GUR. I’m actually ok with how you handled the situation in a casual round TBH but this is the rules forum and you asked about a rules clarification so there’s a specific procedure for that. As for your proposed rule, I don’t agree with the logic at all for the reason I outlined in my previous post. You are trading a bunker lie for a lie in grass for no penalty. And also, there are already rules in place that address the exact situation you found yourself in, including relief options for if the bunker was appropriately marked as GUR or not.
    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
    • Y'all can appoint a few good men from your own league that have proper understanding of the rules or at least access the USGA rules (book, online, etc.) when necessary. They don't have to have some kind of official certification or blessings from any outside org/entity to my knowledge.  Yes, y'all could have collectively declared it GUR under F-16 as @DaveP043 posted as the self appointed committee and you would have been fine to drop outside of this particular bunker. Remember to not declare all bunkers as GUR on a wholesale basis. It is case by case only.  Now you might say 'who's got time for all that' (going around which bunkers should be declared GUR) then I can somewhat understand  your pain but at the same time you cannot fault the tedium of rules  enforcement as a general reason to declare them 'lacking in common sense'.
    • Its simple, YOU are responsible for reporting YOUR score correctly, at every level of golf.  Do you imagine a top pro would really trust anyone else with his score? Without getting too far from the original post, the Rules have been revised every 4 years for decades.  They're continually evaluated, and most changes are in response to changes within the game.  BTW, if wind blows your ball off the green before you've lifted and replaced it, you play from wherever it ends up.  The TV call ins weren't a rule of golf issue, they were a PGA Tour issue, all in an effort to get the call right.
    • Someone asked what I propose. I think if the bunker is full of rainwater, you get to drop it with no penalty directly in back of the bunker, so you still have a tricky shot of chipping over the bunker. People are talking about local committees and such which we just don’t have at our level. My league and playing partners gave the free drop with no issue. My original purpose of this post was just to understand what the “real” rule is, and I now know. But now I also want to encourage people to see that many long time golf rules are outdated and illogical, and hopefully encourage people to push for change. They made some changes in the last few years, so I’m hopeful the game I love will improve if enough people speak out. A lot to hope for posting in a little forum I know, but you have to start somewhere.
