How many of you tee up the ball for Irons? I just started recently doing this, because before I figured it wouldn't make me hit the ball like a fairway situation because it was 'tee'd up'. As I progressed in my golf game, it made it much easier to hit when i tee'd the balls up just a fraction. Some playing partners refuse to tee their ball up for their irons, and some others almost always do. How about you guys?

To paraphrase a famous golfer: "when the rules let you put the ball on a peg, put the damn ball on a peg."

I tee it up pretty darn low with the irons, of course, but it's still on a tee. The only times I won't are when there's a perfect divot that really lets me get at the back of the ball - sometimes then I'll just set the ball on the front edge of the divot. It's basically the same thing as teeing it up, but without an actual tee. And I only do this on short par threes, too.

He was right. I always tee it up when I hit an iron, because it reduces the risk of a mishit. You'll get more distance off the tee and hit it more reliably. I tee it low, perhaps a quarter inch or maybe up to half an inch off the ground.

Tee it low, but definitely put the ball on a tee. I've heard Nicklaus, Trevino, as well as numerous other pros say this. When the rules allow you to create a perfect lie, why on earth wouldn't you take advantage of the opportunity???

Like iacas says, if you can tee the darn ball up then do so. I tee it up so that it's just hovering above the ground/sitting on top of the grass. I don't like to even see the tee, unless I'm teeing off with a 3i or 4i, then I raise it a fraction.

I agree if the rules say you can, why not have a perfect lie on the tee.

I even teed up with a sand wedge yesterday. If you can put the ball on a peg, put it on a peg. You can pretty much rule out hitting it fat.

yeah, I tee it up at all times. I can't remember the last time I played a course where I could hit wedge to a green.

I thought Nicklaus said the same thing..."I never knew anyone who was so good he didn't need to use a tee if given the option"

I can't remember the last time I played a course where I could hit wedge to a green.

I flew 30 yards past the green, into the woods. It was a 110 yard par 3. Caught it a bit thin, and that ball went bye-bye.

Ray Floyd also says to tee it up when the rules allow. It just makes sense. Now if you mentally have a problem hitting your iron's off the tee and you hit them just fine without it then don't fix what ain't broke.

anytime I have to tee off with an iron, then I use a tee. I keep it really low, basically only the head of the tee is showing.

Anyone seen Laura Davis play an iron?

She puts the ball on a lump of mud and does not use a tee.

Anyone seen Laura Davis play an iron?

Yeah, she's big-time old school. I've actually seen her do that with Driver, if she wants to hit a low running shot from the tee box.

Anything from the tee box, I tee up. And like mostly everyone who replied, I tee it up just enough where the head lies even with the ground.

I always use a tee. Usually low, but if I am between clubs, I may take the longer one and tee it slightly higher to get the ball up quicker and take off a little distance.

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.Β
