Think about it.  If Fore is being hollered people must be in range.

I had a somewhat similar situation. My high school buddy and I were on a left dogleg hole. I was just prior to the turn attempting to hook it around the bend. He was in the woods to the left searching for his ball. I took my time trying to set up correctly for my shot. I smacked the ball and immediately heard a loud thump. My buddy had walked right in front of me about 30 yards out. Luckily he was carrying his bag on the side by me, so my rocket hit his bag and fell right next to his feet. That's similar, but calling "fore" wouldn't have done any good.

I have played in a tournament before where a guy in the group behind me was intentionally hitting the ball while we were still on the green trying to scare us. My young cousin and little brother were riding along with my granddad and me(2man scramble...the kids were our 'caddies' haha), so I got sick of it after the 3rd time. I went back and chewed the guy out. He said he called 'fore', so it was ok. It didn't happen anymore after that, but I don't think calling 'fore' is really the issue. Just don't walk in front of people that are hitting and don't hit if people are in your range.

ill hit with others in the general area of front of me if they are paying attention,.......if they arent paying attention i wont play until they are,. if i feel they are to clsoe i ask them to move further out of my line

Always yell a massive fore just incase im getting close to others or cant see where the ball went over the trees etc

Honestly even behind the person is not safe, what if he hits a tree and the ball goes flying behind him...

When I was a kid I used to over swing and smack myself in the back with the shaft of the club.  A couple times I broke the club.  One time it broke and went flying backwards.  Almost hit someone standing behind me.  Still not sure how the physics of that one worked out.

When people refer to standing "behind" someone hitting, they mean behind their line, not literally behind where they are facing when teeing off.   Your definition of 'behind' is actually on the side, and no side is 100% safe being beside a person hitting, as you have found out.

that did kind of come into my head as I was typing, but I figured- they know what I mean. Especially when I was standing "behind/beside" my father when that ball came rocketing back through his legs into my shin.

I am involved with sport injuries and claims and golf is right up there with bungee jumping. The guy who got hit in the OP was negligent and would not have a snowball's chance in hell of claiming compensation.

P.S. Am I the only one who laughed out loud a few times when reading this thread?

I think it unwise to ever be in front of (beyond) the player next to hit.  I have seen a few players hit this way but nothing as serious as the OP describes.  I know in an effort to play "ready" golf and not be slow many do this, but it's dangerous.  I personally would rather see the foursome in front of me take another 5 minutes to complete the round than someone get hurt.

    • Ok, here's a perfect example of what I HATE about the announcers "worship" of certain players. Just now at the Player's Championship Justin Thomas makes a 15 foot put and the announcer says "now he goes from trying to make the cut to being in contention!" JT MADE THE PUTT TO GO TO 2 UNDER WHILE THE LEADERS ARE AT 11 UNDER! HOW THE HECK DOES THAT PUT HIM IN CONTENTION!!! Ok...rant over...sorry about that!
    • Have you made an assessment of your body dynamics and strength. I watch a lot of the myTPI videos and they are always analyzing upper body strength, core strength and lower body strength as well as mobility. Then they see if the player's swing utilizes their body strengths. They also talk about muscle strength and muscle speed and how they are not the same. So if you move your muscles fast enough you need to work on strength whereas if you're strong enough but your muscles don't move fast enough you need to concentrate on speed. Mobility, strength and speed is where i would start analyzing myself.  If you are experiencing back pain with speed training however I would suggest you may have a technique issue that needs to be addressed first before you really hurt yourself.
    • Yeah, what brought the idea to mind was a birdie on hole 4, an uphill par 3.  Normally its about 175 yards, but from the forward tees it was only about 115.  I'd have felt guilty posting that one.
    • Not even 50 years old and falling apart. You've got to wonder - lifestyle? swing technique? heredity? or something else? Yes, we are all aware of the major accident, but for someone who has physically done "everything" to make himself one of the greatest golfers of all time, you have to wonder. Don't think I've known any golfer in the past that has gone through so many injuries and surgeries.
    • Season underway. Home course Round 2 broke the ice with two birdies on hole 6 ((9 iron) and 9 (8 iron), both par 3s. I will try to be diligent in recording this year. Hoping to add at least one on the away course sheet at the end of March with my first ever overseas (Japan) round.
