12 in the bag now. I can shoot the same scores with only 5, so why carry any more??? Just 'cause...

Since I posted this I added an Adams Ovation 3 wood to my bag, but I sometimes take the 3 hybrid out now, so I go back and forth between 12 and 13.

I recently have been experimenting with taking various clubs out of the bag and playing with 13, or playing with a different combination of 14.

When I realized that a minor change in grip with my 4H allows me to hit it the distance of my 4I, and my normal grip with that club allows me to hit it farther, I removed the 4I. I've been experimenting with a different combination of wedges; I put a 50-degree graphite shafted gap wedge in for a round, toyed around with a 56-degree sand wedge for a course with fluffier sand. I also bought a 3-Iron to toy around with, maybe to use on a windy day. In short, I realized the advantage to playing without a full set: it allows me to add an additional club without having to take out a club I was relying upon. If I want to experiment with a different driver, fairway wood, wedge, different set of irons, etc, I can put a few clubs in and still salvage a good round if they turn out to be a bad idea.

User CP, add a signature. Most of us have the "what's in your bag?" as our signature, but it isn't required to have a signature, or to include that in your signature. But the frequency with which we reference different clubs we have makes that a good reference point.

As for 64*, not me. I even toyed with the idea of removing my 58*, except on courses with tough rough. And there's only one such course I play with anything approaching regularity. I so rarely made full shots with it, and I could use my gap wedge for most of the partial shots with it, that I felt I'd be better served with a sand wedge. And now my gaps are off, but that's fine, since I wasn't taking full swings on the 58* anyway.

I find it hard to believe that a 25 handicap would even consider a 64° wedge. a 60° is hard enough to use consistently for good players. I had a 64° briefly about 15 years ago... I found out quickly that it cost me far more strokes than it saved. It's just too specialized and I tended to try to use it where I shouldn't in an unconscious effort to justify carrying it. I only had it in my bag for about 3 months, and I was a better golfer then than (11 handicap) I am now (12.7 index). My handicap improved by almost 2 strokes (to 9.4) in 2 months after I dropped it.... guess it was the right choice for me.

You are allowed 14 it makes no sense to carry fewer than that.

Why carry something that you don't use? I carry the clubs I need to get around the course. In fact, I can drop 3 or 4 more (keeping 8 or 9) and still shoot decent scores, just not quite as consistent as it makes for more "touch" shots. If I have a club that I'm only likely to need once in 3 or 4 rounds, then I don't bother. It's more weight to lug around, and I'd just as soon learn to make that one shot with something else.... not a difficult thing with a little practice.

I use 14. Driver, 3W, 5W, 25 degree hybrid, 6-PW, plus 52, 55, 60 and 64 wedge and putter. For me anyways the 64 is a great club. I can full swing from 60 yards with it and occasionally use it to chip when the right shot circumstances come up. That is there is grass but not too deep or shallow and I want to stop the ball fairly quick. A semi flop if you will. Otherwise I just bump and run

Right now, I have 15, but that's because I have two drivers in my bag, mainly just trying to decide upon one and it's been hard.

I have a TM r7 and HiBore driver, TM 3 and 4 hybrids, 5-PW, 62 degree SW, 60 degree LW, putter, and 3W/5W. Probably will stick with the r7 as my driver, and keep the HiBore as "backup" at home.

That extra slot comes for when you're experimenting with other clubs. So maybe you decide one day that you want to use a 5-Wood or a 2-Iron or another hybrid or something. You can put it in the bag without having to remove the clubs you're used to. Then you can try it on the course and if it doesn't work out, go back to the clubs you usually play with.

I often talked to my buddy and challenge him to play only 3 clubs during a round of 18 holes.

I saw the PROs play with one club on TV once. I believe they chose a 5 iron.

My buddy lightens his bag with only 10 clubs and still beats me.
