theres a guy at work ses its easy to hit out of a dibit just take another inside it. hes been playing for four years.he also ses that its all about distance and how good a brand of clubs u have.i had to histaricly laph at him when i asked him how much he practices he ses he practices when hes on the golf course.this went into me telling him he should go to the driving range he told me only morons go there.that it wont teach u any thing and that u can only hit off a mat and that it dont teach u any thing and u cant learn any thing at a driving range.

thoughts and opinions on this guy is he a moron do u even think he ever goes golfing?

Well he is correct to a certain extent. There are players who look great at the range and you get them on the course and they can't play from anything but a flat "clean" area. Practice on the course is what will make you a better player. Practice at the range is where you can fine tune your swing.

I love when my friends tell me they did great at the range, and you get them on the course and its a whole different story.

oviously u dont get the purpose of a driving range .you can practice any shot at the driving range u would find at a golf course exept sand trap stuff.u have ruff and fairway and also uphill and dowhill lyes whatever u want to practice.then u can see if u hit a good shot if that one shot was a fluck if so u can do that shot over and over and over again till u fine tune it u cant do this on a golf course.

The range is a great place to groove the swing.  I see your HC is 27......it's a great place for beginners like yourself to gain confidence and to learn to consistently advance the ball and make contact.

And this is coming from a guy who hasn't hit a bucket of balls since 1995....I've never been accused of being a range rat, but the range definitely has it's benefits.  I used to beat a ton of balls at the range when I was starting out.   I believe golfers should not play at a golf course until they've learned to hit the ball airborne with consistency at the range first....

I'd have to see him write a paragraph before I characterized him as a moron.

I think that's absolutely ridiculous. A green 200 yards away 80% of the time? The best GIR on the PGA tour isn't even 80% I don't think.

Well said.

Hmmm....by this logic every single pro on tour shouldn't play golf... Tour leader for GIR is currently 74%ish.... I'd laugh at you as well if you presented with your argument...

I'm a computer programmer. I write with reasonable grammar and don't misspell words all that often. When I do they're legitimate typographical errors, not just laziness or stupidity.

Just a word of advice: all people have to judge you is what you type here.

Still, I'm virtually certain I've "waisted" my time just now.

Don't take it personally.  A lot of people with jobs that require them to interact with people take offense when the English language is completely mangled beyond recognition.  It's not that you are stupid, it is just that you look stupid to someone who's only connection to you is one completely illegible paragraph.

I'm sure you'd feel the same way if I was trying to write code.

To answer your question, there is no "right" answer.  You can improve by going to the driving range, but as was stated earlier, there are limitations.  You can also improve greatly by playing, but it can be pretty frustrating if you can't consistently execute the golf swing enough to move your way around the course.

Or, put another way, "U shuud elway perktace yer gaym, ether at the rainj oar on the cors."

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
