Anybody ever seen a really high quality chipper ?

Look at You-tube and hunt for bits on a chut...  (chip + Putt).

You basically take an 7i or 8i, address the ball with the club's heel slightly off the ground, and hit the ball on the toe with a putting stroke.

The ball pops up into the air about 6 inches and lands with a smooth rollout. Something you might want to try.

(I tried it, but figured it was too much hassle to work in.)

@mvmac wrote a great post on the chitch or the pip. I love this method - I've found it to be very effective. Try working through this before getting another chipper.

OK so replying to myself may seem a little self centered, sorry. I thought I´d let you know I've found a way. I bought a 5 iron from Gigagolf and had it built to the length and lie of a wedge.

Club: Gigagolf Pursuit C510 5 iron with a True Temper shaft and a Lamkin Xline grip.

Specs: 36.5 inch shaft (i.e. male standard + 1 inch), 65 degree lie (male standard + 4 degrees upright)

the specs are similar to what I would have for a PW (36.5 / 65.5) but with a 28 degree loft vs 48 degrees

I don´t really need alignment aids I am fine using a classic shape. Works a charm for me, and offers all the versatility I was looking for. I play it on short chips around the Green, or bump and roll from 80-100 yards in, but also low shots under trees or even into the wind if I want a low shot off the tee up to 120-130 yards on a short par 3.

Cleveland has come out with their Smart Sole 2.0, one for chipping (47*) and one for sand shots (58*).  The refined wide and forgiving sole promotes crisp and clean contact for more consistent chip shots from any lie around the green. This club also performs great on full shots from 125 yards and in.  I haven't tested the Smart Sole 2.0, but I did like care for the original Smart Sole on full shots.

Tour Edge also released their 1OutPlus wedge for sand and chipping.  The new 1Out Plus wedge features an ultra-heavy head with a counter-balanced grip to make greenside bunker and chip shots easier than ever. To counter-balance the wedge, 90 grams of additional weight is added in the butt end of the grip to counter the heavier head. The weighting increases stability and improves wrist position at impact.

For those that don't have room in their bags for a dedicated chipper most wedge manufacturers offer a wide sole grind (Callaway - W grind, Vokey - K grind, Cleveland - RTX 2.0 Wide Sole).  I have found these to be easier to hit full shots and chip with as well.

The more I work with my custom made chipper (see description in earlier post), the more versatile it gets. I've now added controlled low fades, slices, draws and hooks on 130 yards. It´s perfect for playing low shots under and around trees! By now it's probably the 2nd or 3rd most used club in my bag!

As far as I know, chippers are only illegal when they have a double face allowing them to be hit lefty or righty. As long as they are single faced, they should be fine, provided they don't run afoul of any other ROG.

I have a chipper, a cheap cast zinc thing. Works pretty good to but I look at it like a one trick pony. I don't need a one trick pony in my bag. 

   I don't understand your aversion to putting from off the green. It's a pretty good way for me, more finesse in some situations. I sure wouldn't want to chip to a downhill pin location.
