How do you record your swing?

Obviously not everyone records their swing when they go to the range, but a lot of us do. When you get there, what do you use? High speed cameras are great and very effective. They have great FPS and when taking a lesson from a coach it is a no brainer. However, there are those times (in my case it seems to be most times) that I am either practicing alone or I am surrounded by a bunch of strangers, but still want to video my swings. My go to video device is my iPhone. In the past there were only a couple of ways to video my swing using an iPhone. I either rigged something up on my bag which failed about 80% of the time, or I had to have someone stand there and hold my phone until I was done. It was very frustrating for me, and I couldn't believe that there wasn't an easier way to video than that.

That's why I decided to create my own mounting device using something that almost every golfer had. Its called the ProtoSports Holster. It is a clip designed for the iPhone that allows you to connect your iPhone to an alignment stick for hands free video anywhere on the golf course. It works great and I never have the problems with video that I used to. Now, all I do is take my alignment rod out of my bag, slide it into the ground, and connect my iPhone at whatever height desired and start videoing.

I started working on my design almost a year ago and it is finally completed. Here are some photos of the holster and how it works.

The ProtoSports Website opened up about a week ago and we have already begun to have some big success. We have a few players on the Web.com tour like Martin Piller (shown in the photo), Egolf Professional Tour, and some Universities using the Holster.

We are trying to get the word out to all golfers and would love to hear some feedback. Users on the site have begun buying and we have some good product reviews posted for everyone to check out!

I usually use my Casio high speed camera attached to a tripod, but this is definitely an interesting product. While my tripod doesn't fit in my bag, I've always got a few of those sticks in my bag.

I usually use my Casio HS camera as well... It'd be cool if I could get a mount like this that fit my camera...

I bring my fiancee and have her use the cellphone.

Tonight was really beneficial for me.. realized the shots that were horrible and sliced were when I didn't have enough axis tilt.. and was too 'over the top' on my back and downswing which had my body trying to re-adjust mid-swing to get back into place.. which failed obviously.

I should have done this sooner

btw, i like the idea.. i would purchase it.

Great idea, but, unbelievably, not everyone has an iPhone.  I have a Motorola Droid Razr that I'm going to try to attach to an alignment stick with Velcro next time out, unless someone has another suggestion that doesn't include getting an iPhone.

I bought a Casio HS camera earlier this year as well as a camera extender (basically a small monopod) that I can stick into my bag to film my swing. I haven't been able to use it just yet because of injury, but I can't wait to recover and start viewing and analyzing my swing.

ProtoSports is a start up company. Our intentions were to reach out to what we knew was a broad market in the iPhone and move forward from there. We have intentions on developing products in the future that will allow for any phone user to video their swings in the same way. Right now they are only available for the iPhone but recent feedback has us looking into providing a product for all of the other phones as well. For now, apologies to others without iPhones, we are working to meet your needs in the near future.

how does this hold up with a stiff wind at the range?

edit: does it move similar to a flagstick in the wind?

The alignment sticks are made of fiberglass so they are pliable. The cool thing about the design of the holster is that you can move it up and down the alignment rod. In windy conditions it will sway some but you can slide the stick in the ground further and or put the phone further down the rod to make the stick less pliable. Obviously if the conditions are extremely windy it is going to be hard to video with the alignment rod.

Alternative solutions are to place the stick through an umbrella slot in your bag, or rest your bag against the stick and it will eliminate almost all movement.

This works.

It will sway in the wind if you have it at the top of the stick and its pretty windy, but snugging it up to your bag like this will stop it.  I also used this trick to take a video when I couldn't get the stick into the ground.

With my iPhone and the Protosports holster... I'm able to take quality HD video without the camera moving around.  This holster is awesome.

Here is a pro tip to help with playback... For video playback on my notebook... I import the video from my iPhone, and then I use a piece of free software from VideoLAN.  The VLC player (free download) is awesome - and allows playback speeds of 0.2x (very slow) and makes it easy for me to pause the frames at the positions from A1 to A8, so that I can take screen shots to get photos of my swing sequence (see below).

Why spend money on a high speed camera?  This is the power of the iPhone?!  Yes it is.  And with the Protosports holster, you can take some very nice video of your swing without worrying about camera movement.

      To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
