im 22 and just started playing 8 months ago but I'm beyond obsessed with the sport. I hit the ball a really long ways but i hit it too high with my short irons and balloon it with my long irons. Im down in tampa now and met a kid and his dad was James Black who played on the pga at the same time as arnold palmer and all those guys. however, his trajectory was unreal, he hit every shot low and could make the long irons release and the short irons stop or come back. My flight is just so high wherever it hits on the green its either staying there or rolling back 2 feet at the most and thats if the slope is back towards me. I would love to get the ball flight this kid has and I tried not swinging so hard and not hinging at the top so bad. any instruction will help as i am a quick learner and if it doesn't feel right immediately I'm pretty good at making the adjustments.

here are my distances so you guys have an idea: yes these are legit and they do balloon pretty bad. with my driver I average 120-127 swing speed off the tee and I have used trackman to get those numbers more than 20 times. gotten ball speed up to 197 but I do not swing like that on the course. trying to find more control and a lower ball flight so I can shape the shot better. Ive been working on a draw and a fade and can actually do them fairly well its just that I hit the damn ball a mile in the air.

4 - 240

5 - 225

6 - 210

7-195

8-185

9-175

P - 155

GW - 140

I can work all these to take about 5 yards off or put 5 more on top. everything is good except for my ball flight

Adams Pro A12 with KBS shafts.. not the C-Taper, however I am getting X100 put on mine as these are mid to high launch shafts anyways. I have the 6-GW bent back a degree.

If you're truly hitting those clubs those distances and remain a 14 handicap, you should be less concerned with trajectory and more concerned with your short game.

Just a random question, but are you hitting down with your irons or more of a "sweeping" swing?  Also, where is the ball in relation to your front foot?  While I can't get those types of distances myself, I know I have a sweep swing and don't get stop on the greens unless it's my PW or maybe a 9i.

:-O These distances are unreal, even for the internet.

haha can't make this stuff up! the hardest part is hitting into the wind they go nowhere simply because they go so high. i have it relatively forward in my stance and yes i do believe i have a pretty steep swing. my balls literally hit the green and bounce once and just sit. I would love to be able to lower it and get some spin on the ball cause if i come up short there is zero chance for the ball to roll out even 5 feet. I would like to learn this swing so I have more options with my clubs where i can carry the green or run it up the front. thanks for the input

1. Need different shafts

2. Ball back in stance keeps it lower

3. Flatten swing out and hit a draw.

Playing 8 months and those are your distances? your average distances? or your maximum downwind distances? I consider myself quite a big hitter compared to most of the people around my handicap that I play with and you basically have 2 clubs on me i.e your 9i is my 7i etc. but seriously forget trajectory for a bit and knock ten shots off your hcap with working on some short game, I've always felt anyone who can reach the hole in the correct amount of shots even if not a GIR should be a single figure handicap, I don't get why people don't work on what is imo the most important part of the game, short game! Stop worrying about traj and start logging where you're losing those 14 shots instead of worrying about having a pretty ballflight :)

Steve I like what your saying and I'm a 15 or so handicap can you give me any hints on things to work on as far as short game I don't have a ton of time to practice all the ranges are kinda far and the course that's close to me kinda rapes you to hit range balls. If there's something I can do at home to work on my short game or something at the putting green I"m all about it I'd like to cut that 15 down to 10 by the end of next year if possible.

These are my usual distances but they vary so much just cause hitting into the wind i have no idea how to keep it low. but no wind and downwind, yes i can consistently hit these distances. the only problem being they're 100% carry

What is your ball flight?  I am guessing weak fade.  If they are really high the face is likely open, like you are opening up a wedge.  To hit a punch shot follow through lower, in the beginning the ball will probably go left, way left.  Figure it out for windy days.

I have a very high ball flight without the extreme distance.

Im curious to see if the critics think those distances are so fake they aren't even going to bother or if they will show up.

Lets wait and see.

FWIW I kind of find it unbelievable.

If this is serious then I would say don't worry about it for now. If you are a 15 handicap dont worry about your trajectory and worry about maybe scoring or some of those other important things. There are no pictures on a scorecard. The only trajectory that should be important right now is when chipping, pitching, or flopping the ball. If you can reach any par 5 in 2 and par 4's are no problem then you either struggle with alot of miss hits or you have a terrible short game.

I coach our varsity golf team and I have a kid that's playing that hits his SW just about 150, just ridiculous and it's a nice flight and swing and he has only been playing a year. Not something you see often for sure but I am seeing it now. As mentioned, check what your shaft flight is and how steep is your swing. A really steep swing path will launch the ball higher.

    • "Positional" shots? How do we do that? I am using the V3 and edit on my laptop.
    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
