With a pair of 68s, Weir just made his 5th cut of the year in his 13th event of the year having used a all time money list exemption.  Looking at his stat, he is putting pretty well (35th in strokes gained) but still struggling tee to green (last on tour among full time players in distance, total driving and GIR and 179th out of 190 in fairways hit).

Being short and wild doesn't seem like a recipe for success, so it is impressive that he has been able to make any cuts at all.  His short game and general scoring ability seems to be working this week as he has hit less than 1 in 3 fairways and just over half the greens, but still found a way to get to -4.  Hopefully he will be able to improve his ball striking going forward.

Yup. Statistically, he's by far the worst driver of the golf ball on the PGA Tour. The only other guys close to him are Badds and Kevin Na, and they're both in the top 10 for putts gained -- so that's how they pay their bills.

Stretch.

Mike Weir was never a long hitter even at his prime. He was dead straight shooter and a reasonably good short game. With his accuracy gone, he is pretty much screwed. But no one should write off any players. It wasn't that long ago that we thought Jeff Maggert's career was over.

In 2012, Weir was 0 for 14 in cuts made.  While still outside the top 150 on Tour, he has made 6 of his last 9 cuts including top 33 finishes at the Nelson, US Open and John Deere.  Not great golf, but WAY BETTER than where he was.  I would be surprised if he wins another PGA event, but I think he has a decent shot to make it back into the top 125 at some point (maybe next year).

Exactly my point.  You talk like he was the best player of that time.  He wasnt.  He was good, no doubt but so were a lot of others. Sorry but being a flash in the pan and winning 1 major doesnt make you an elite player in my book.  I feel the same way about Bubba and Keegan Bradley.  Win another major and show me you werent a fluke.

Lol at you. 15 minutes of fame? He won 8 events and the masters.

Will we ever see the lefty from Canada back in the Fed Ex Cup Playoffs?

It looks like the answer to the question I asked in 2012 will be yes.  With his solo 2nd this week, Weir is 87th on the Fed Ex Cup points list with 370 points, ahead of Tiger, Phil and Henrik Stenson.  Last year 125th was 369 points, so he is in strong position to secure a playoff spot.

Follow-up ?  Will this weeks result be a one off occurrence, or will Weir have more top 10s and future Fed Ex Cup playoff appearances down the road?

Come on Weirsy! Keep it rolling and find a way to get back in the winners circle

Good to see him have a solid tournament. Despite having 2 big strikes against him ( he's Canadian and a lefty ;-) ) I've always liked him.

Can't tell you how happy I was for Weirsy! To see him struggle so much the last few years was very difficult. We all know how mental this game we love is, so hopefully this gives him that confidence he had been lacking for so long. Great weekend.

Since finishing second in Texas, he has really struggled and only has made two cuts...very disappointing as he will not make the playoffs or secure a PGA Tour card. Back to square one for him.

He has struggled, and without a decent finish at the Wyndham will miss the playoffs (currently 134th in Fed Ex Cup) but at 97th on the money list, he should retain his card and be able to get into a decent number of events next season.

Does he retain his card? I thought that they switched it to only top 125 FedEx cup leaders get their card?

Agreed. Plus, I think injuries have taken too much of a toll.

Well dammit if 2012 jamo finally got one right!

Mike Weir shares alot of similarities to David Duval as far as where their games have gone since the early 2000s. They both show a bit to start each season now but fall later on.

As a big Duval fan I share the pain but at least Mike has strung together a few nice ones. Enough to get some traction back in his career. If only a little.

Ive attended quite a few Canadian Opens being so close to Ontario and even well after his game has fallen off, Canadians still follow him like Tiger during the tournament. Good to see as Mike has earned it. Certainly had a good enough stretch to consider his career very successful. He might not have had the overall depth of resume as Duval (money list perhaps but that is skewed based on growing purses) but in comparison even a small window of success (5-6 years) doesnt make your accomplishments any less.

If I had to pick between the 2 to win again Id pick Duval. Certainly some bias but Mikes problem is his length. If hes not hitting it straight he cant rely enough on length or other parts of his game. Duvals length is still competitive enough to score even if mistakes off the tee are made.

Be fun to see both guys win a few again before senior tour.

As for Canada in general its nice to see DeLaet emerge as a legitimate contender on tour. His game I always felt had enough in it to be better than Weir overall. Hes got more distance as well. Whether he lives up to it is another question.
