I was surprised some talking head on Golf Channel this weekend said if the wind doesn't blow (the extended forecast shows fairly benign conditions if they can predict that far ahead of time), the winning score will be ten under or better.

Great, that means Tiger will bring his wind game just like he did for the British Open

I might as well point out right now that out of Tiger Woods' 74 PGA Tour victories, only one of them has been on a Pete Dye-designed course.

In my UnderArmour Links stand bag...

Driver: '07 Burner 9.5° (stiff graphite shaft)
Woods: SasQuatch 17° 4-Wood (stiff graphite shaft)
Hybrid: 4DX Ironwood 20° (stiff graphite shaft)Irons/Wedges: Apex Edge 3-PW, GW, SW (stiff shaft); Carnoustie 60° LWPutter: Rossa AGSI+ Corzina...

At the PGA, Tiger needs to finish: -- solo 4th to go over $100 million in official career earnings. -- solo 3rd, with cooperation from Luke and Rory, to become #1 in the world rankings. -- first, to make his critics shut up for a few days.

You think that'll get him a FEW days? :) Unless he closes with a 63 I'm pretty sure some people will find fault in something he does Sunday night. And even with a 63 it's even money. :)

The majority of people in golf. You can hate Tiger all you want but to say things like that you're just exposing yourself as a guy that's completely unaware of the world around him. Just because you don't like or care about the guy doesn't change the reality - he's the only needle-mover in the game.

Overdue for a major win: Steve Stricker--plays well when conditions are mild and clock is ticking (45yo) Lee Westwood--game is too inconsistent for this course Matt Kuchar--He lives on St. Simons Island, so should be comfortable at Kiawah All that said, I think Duffner will finish on top.

Erik, what part of the game does Kiawah test the most? I've heard that it will be the sort game as a lot of greens will be missed. What are your thoughts on what kind of player will do well on this course?

Driving and hitting greens if the winds are up. The greens are small so they'll be a factor regardless, but I don't know that the course will play all that long. The course doesn't ever seem to get really firm.

Putting is weird. The greens will be slower than usual (paspalum) and they're overall pretty flat in most places, so reads will be difficult. Believe it or not but flat greens are sometimes the toughest to putt. But I don't know if this favors anyone - there are good putters but they can have bad weeks, especially if they never get the reads quite right.

The "bunkers" will be interesting since they're being played as through the green.

It's a Dye course, so in the end - wind or not - you've simply gotta hit targets. That will mean playing away from the hole on a lot of the holes where it can be tucked and playing for pars, and being aggressive (or making some longer putts) when it makes sense for birdies.

The course is seaside but plays absolutely nothing like a links course.

I'll have my full article up (though it's more about how fun it is to vacation there than an exposé on the course) later tonight.

Thanks Erik. The comment I heard (on CBS I believe), said if the winds are up it will be hard to hit the greens and thus the short game will be very important.

Play begins at 7:20 AM; TV coverage begins at 1 PM. Why does the PGA give the TV contract to a network that's going to show less than half the play? This isn't the BC Open, it's the final major of the year, with possibly the strongest field in history (the last I heard, they have all of the top 108 in the world there, which I don't think has happened before -- usually somebody is injured), in a spectacular setting. ESPN had over ten hours of live coverage on Thursday and Friday for the British Open, even though a lot of it was in the middle of the night. Yet TNT only has 6 hours a day live for the PGA. I want my money back.

  • Administrator

Who says it's the PGA limiting coverage? Maybe TNT doesn't want to cover more than six hours a day.

in my opinion if there is little wind -10 won't be enough to win. lets hope it blows 25 MPH!!

Took a trip there a couple years ago, it is a nice island but all we did was golf!!

It was briefly, but I had to send it to the guys there for the once-over (factual review - not a lot of facts, so even though it's long, it shouldn't TAKE too long).

Here are some pictures. The "k" ones are all of the images, and the "ki" ones are duplicates but the better ones I used in the article. The "k" ones are pretty much in order, though, so you can "walk around" the Ocean Course and some of Turtle Point.
