Hi,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Octavian Pope. I am a doctor from Toronto, Canada. I have a way of holding the club that nobody else on this planet has, but it really works for me. I made a video out of it, which is on Youtube. I am not trying to sell anything. If anyone is interested in watching it, I promise it's unlike anything you've ever seen before. Any feedback would be welcome. Thank you. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/HLR-MJoexoA

You're a physician. You begin the video demonstration with a disclaimer stating that golfers should try the grip at their own risk. That you're not responsible for any injury resulting from use of the grip? I don't think so...... :-\ I am curious though.....other than the novelty, what do you think the grip does to improve over the more conventional grips?

you have taken a very long route to get to the point of not having a dominant right hand in the golf swing.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

I've been reading these forums consistently for the last 3 years and never posted, but this thread is just too good not to make my first post.

First off, this CANNOT be serious. This has to be a video parody-ing other lengthly videos with ultra-technical explanations of swing mechanics. Or a troll. The way that you have to physically mangle your right fingers into place with your left hand is brilliant. I was dying during that part! I was trying to think of other funny things you could do to the golf swing to make it hilariously technical, but I couldn't come up with anything good. Then you said to change the grip midswing... simply incredible. Why didn't I think of that?

I do have one idea for you though. At 11:18 in your video, you drew the arc of a "two-axis system", and it was very arced. Then at 11:50, you showed your "one-axis system," which was less arced. BUT, at 12:15, you drew a line that was PERFECTLY down the target line using a standard grip! Therefore, it's only logical to choose the standard grip according to your Sharpie experiment.

But in all seriousness, I found your video very interesting and entertaining. I'll be looking forward to the rest of this thread.

I assure you that this is not a joke or parody, it's perfectly serious. I know my grip is extremely weird, I'll be the first to admit it, but this is what works for me. I was also accused at Toronto Golf Nuts and WRX that this is a joke, so I offered to meet with one or more people from Toronto Golf Nuts in person so they can see me hitting balls at the range, and hopefully post back on the forum after. Thank you.

I wonder what the progression was to get to that "grip".  I think i'd have tried swining the club with my feet before i went to that grip.

Step 1: Hmm... I'm swinging too hard.

Step 2: I need to find a way to force myself to make a balanced swing.

Step 3: I'll make a grip that will break my fingers if I swing too hard.

Step 4: Post on golf forum.

Step 5: ???

Hi Octi, can you outline the advantages of your grips over the more common types of grip. And why not go straight to the secondary grip instead of the first.

Taking the above advice may lead to destruction of your golf game. Laughing at it may reduce stress.

I have confirmed that my fingers will simply not bend in the manner necessary for this phenomenal new approach to holding a golf club.  All of you Pope Grip converts will have to leave my behind to suffer with my old Vardon grip.  I feel so left out.

I tried to play along but stopped when one of my fingers made a cracking noise. Phew, that was a close one...

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
