  1. 1. Did I break 80? (see below)

    • Yes, slap yourself on the back!
      7
    • No, put your nose back on the grind and appreciate where you are.
      33
    • Not sure how I feel about this.
      3
    • You suck because you can not put a full round together with this score!

I think it is sweet that somebody finally voted the "I suck" choice. I will bet it was Sean Miller

That's what happened to me this past weekend.  I was on pace to beat my personal best by like 5 strokes going into the 13th hole.  Then, because the tee shot called for it, I tried to hit a fade.  I play a draw 99% of the time and don't ever practice a fade.  But I tried.  I hit it OB and took a triple bogie.  Ended up tying my personal best anyway, though.

So, today I played the Leadville Golf course for the first time...it is one of America`s highest at almost 10 K feet above sea level.  I broke 80, but the round has 4 potential asterisks

1.  They only have 9 greens, but you play the blues the first time through followed by the blacks the second time to get 18.  Does shooting 36-38 count as breaking 80?  Same pin placements both times through and the only real difference is that the blacks are about 10-20 yards behind the blues on most tees.

2.  The greens were long and slow, making it easy to chip and stop close to the hole.

3.  The tees were mostly on the front part of the tee boxes (likely because they were aerated recently).

4.  I probably took more than 5 minutes searching for a ball.  My provisional was on the front of the green and my original ran a lot more than I expected.  I did not find it until after I had "given up" (after approximately a 5 minute search) and was walking towards the green and found it about 40 yards in front of the area where I had been looking.

1,2 and 3 are completely out of your control and just the nature of the course and situation.  There is a similar course in San Diego that I played a few times, but I want to say they might have had 2 pins on each green ... I just don't remember.

The 4th is the tricky one, but if it was me and its just a casual round - meaning I'm not bothering to look at my watch when I start looking - then I have no problem playing that ball and calling my score legit.  If you really aren't sure how long you looked and it could have been 6 minutes or 4 minutes, then big deal.  You broke 80, no asterisks.

I don`t wear a watch and didn`t bother looking at my phone which I keep in my golf bag...I would guess it was certainly closer to 6 (or even 7) minutes than 4...It was on #5 and I was beating my friend 3 or 4 up at the time, so he thought he was going to get one back and did mention the 5 minute thing after I put my second with the original on the edge of the green, but in his normal game they tend to play "winter rules" on the fairway most of the time and give a lot of putts, so I don`t think he was going to seriously try to play time keeper after the fact.

HEY DON'T HIJACK MY THREAD!!! Just kidding. It sounds like a easy track but playing back to back nines counts. It also sounds like it would be crazy if a good amount of people would be playing. If it was me..... I would look at the difficulty of the course and whether it truly tested your abilities. The asterisks are obviously a black flag on your feeling of accomplishment. It still looks good on a scorecard and you can say you did shoot a 74.

I'm amazed that Leadville would even be playable this late in the season.  For those who don't know, Leadville is one of the highest and coldest towns in Colorado, and I would have expected the course to be closed by now.

As to your question, if the course is rated for the way it's played, then the score is legitimate.  I've heard of courses with slopes down in the 90's, which only means that you get fewer handicap strokes for net.  Gross score is still what you shot, and shooting that low on the highest golf course in the US in mid October is a rare feat.

I thought it was an easy track, but my friend, whose index is 6 something, really struggled.  The greens were very small and slightly elevated- he plays a lower shot with less spin than I do so he had some land on and rolled over while on a few others he hit the up slope in front and stayed short.  We were playing even and he joked on the back 9 that it would have been a good match if a tie had counted as a win for him (aka, I gave him a half shot a hole).

While the fairways themselves were quite narrow, one of the things that made this course easy (besides the short length at about 6 K yards) was that less than half the holes had OOB/Lost ball potential and it was typically only on one side of the fairway.  At Keystone, where I played most of my rounds this season, there were a number of holes that I had OOB/Lost Balls/hazards on both sides- wider fairways overall, but no clear bail out side.

Sometimes things go so well they seem easy. Who knows, you could go back and shoot a 90 next time.

Yay it became official!! I shot a 78 today, it included a eagle and a birdie. I left a lot on the table as well. Par was 70 on the track and it was not a intensely difficult course. I will post the slope later.

The rating and slope if cared to know: 66.1/119. Greens are small and the course is short only 5581 yards. Pretty course though.

Must have picked the "you suck" choice. I guess I am a horrible person for just yacking it up about golf.

Nice! Eagles are special. I had a 30 foot chip in after a beautiful 4 wood in.
