Hi Tuffluck..it's true for many. Golf range good shot making, golf course not so good...Are you playing off mats on the range. If so they camouflage your indifferent striking...Also hitting the same shot after shot… you grove...also for most guys on the range they don’t pick a target. It gets harder when your aiming at a flag. Question..If you shoot in the low 90s how come you have a 14.9 H/Cap 15+72 makes 87. Just wondered.

It is because you do not understand the handicap system. I am a 21 and shoot in the high 90s- low 100s.

Obviously on the range you are always playing off a perfect lie.  Not so on the course.  As has been mentioned you are also often getting in a  rhythm from swinging the same club time after time. One thing I do sometimes is mix my clubs up every swing on the range.  Usually every other swing a driver and then pick another club at random.  It's good for me to go through all the clubs in  the bag when I practice.  I think it simulates a round a little better.  And I try to hit off grass if at all possible.  The mats are fool's gold, though if nothing else if available, I take "the perfect should not be the enemy of the good" approach.

That's golf.  I shot 88 a couple weeks ago, 5 days later fought like heck for a 97!  Played the other day, par on the first hole, unfortunate chip shot that didn't check on the 2nd and made bogey, then all downhill from there.  Stopped keeping score I was so angry and wound up driving off the course on the 14th hole.

I shot a 100 Sunday.  45 on the front and 55 on the back. Not sure what happened.  But in my experience - when things are going great and seem like they always will be, you can still make a turn for the worse. And when things are looking club-selling terrible, they will probably get better soon.

Been there for sure, seems like whenever I start feeling like my game is coming around I inevitably throw in some flat out clunkers and come crashing back to reality in a hurry. I think its just part of the process for a high handicaper like myself but it's still no less frustrating when you know your capable of playing better and, for whatever reason, the wheels just come off. Honestly, I think it just comes with the territory, though, I don't think I've ever met a golfer who (regardless of their level of play) didn't go through a bad stretch. What's that old saying..."you're never as good as your last win and your never as bad as your last loss"...seems to apply to golf just as well.

i got new clubs about a month ago and had been having a time with the long irons and have been hitting a strong fade that really killed my distance.  i couldn't figure it out.  but i went to the range friday night and it dawned on me that i wasn't turning my wrists enough through impact.  as soon as i did that, i was launching my 4i straight and even with a draw.  i hit an entire small bucket with the 4i and hit 40/50 balls 200 yards and right straight on target.  it was the best range session i've ever had.

saturday i went out and played the worst round of golf in my life.  mishits, shanks, slices, topping, fat.  pretty much every bad shot in golf i experienced multiple times this weekend.  at some point on the 4th or 5th hole, i kind of gave up.  i would have left but the girlfriend wanted to keep playing.  i think i shot a 59 on the front 9, and usually i'm a low 90s player.  i had also had about 4 mimosas before the round which really screwed up my concentration, though i don't know if that's a legitimate excuse.  honestly though by the 4th hole i just did not want to play anymore.

and i haven't wanted to play since.  i'm so frustrated and have no idea what happened and why i melted down like i did after a night of brilliance (for me) at the range.  has anyone ever had this happened?  i guess i need to go back to the range to restore my confidence.  either that or no more brunch and mimosas for me before a round.

Really? And you are wondering what happened?

LOL amen OP.

Last week Friday a friend and I went out and I shot low 80's with no MIA balls and a decent enough game for myself.  Got trashed that night, went out with another group and played the next morning and played skins and lost every hole up to 14.  I mean I was tallying down doubles and triples.  It was bad.  Like really bad.  But then got rained out had a burger at the clubhouse went back out and went even on 15-16-17-18 with tap in par putts.

So my advice is have a BBQ hamburger and talk about the one good putt/strike you made.  Forget about the rest.  Selective memory is our greatest ally.

Also if you begin shanking then you must embrace the shank.  Open your stance and really drive the hosel into the ground and let it twist the club and shank the ball.  With a nice open stance your hosel shanks should fly low and straight and not be affected by things like wind.

This is America.  If I step out and slice a ball OB off the first tee I will drop six more balls until I crush one 315yds down the middle.  And then I will announce with a US southern drawl that I am laying 2 before I shank the next one into a creek, where I will drop a ball by the green and lay 3.  It's our God given right as Americans.  Seeing as how US is the best country in the world we should have at least 5 mulligans per player during the Ryder Walker and Solheim.  Lord knows we need them.  The same goes for the PGA tour.  Free mulligans for America, everyone else can clean our clubs wash our balls and ask us for tips on being amazing.

With every one of your posts, you look a little more foolish. And you're correct, the 20+ handicapper understands it better than you do.

Also, we don't do this "mulligan nonsense" in America. You, my friend...are a wanker.

this is a very inconsistent way of hitting the ball.

to the OP - don't sweat it.  i shot 40 and 43 on the front 9 of my muni course the last two times i played.  I went to the range, hit everything perfectly!  i'm talking deadly accuracy with every iron, 300+ drives dead straight.

I got to the course, parred the first hole, had a lost ball on the second hole par 3, hit provisional, thought i found my first ball, played it, got to the green realized it wasn't mine but had already picked up the provisional, replaced the provisional played it to a 5 (which technically isn't legal anyway because i picked it up already).  then FOUND My first ball after holing out, played it to a bogey but knew that the hole was basically ruined.  Everything fell apart after that.  got a 9 on a 130 yard dead straight par 3... was in the woods the next few holes, then for a grand finale, I pounded 7 balls with 300 yard slices DEEP into the woods - couldn't get a playable tee shot.  got a 20 on the 9th hole.

it happens to all of us.

Sounds like the rage monster came out since you just kept hitting driver off the tee.... I've done that before, total Tin Cup moment.

What about my "a special person you Neanderthal Troglodyte"? I don't have one of those.

So, if I'm not mistaken, the proper way to insult someone is...again...with horrific grammar? Cool, I'll jot that down...

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
