That sounds like a good plan... 6500 is a long course if you don't hit driver or a fairway wood off the tee on a regular basis... At 5700 yards you still have a chance to get home in two using a long iron off the tee. You should see some lower scores and probably enjoy it a bit more as well...

Work on the driver though at the range and once you feel comfortable with it you can try to back up again.

Thanks....and yes, golf dollars go a long way in these parts!   It was sunny and 50 today, so I got my membership today!!  .....but I only played 10 holes. LOL    It was one of those days when the flags were bending sideways........10 holes was enough!   I didn't even keep score.....it just felt good to get outside and hit a few golf shots.   This course is extremely difficult, so it will be fun to see how much my HC rises in 2013.    Reaching the greens is only half the battle because they are very slopey and difficult to 2-putt unless you are near the cup.  I've been playing the same course since 2006......so a golf change this year should be fun!!

It will be in the 50s again tomorrow with less wind, so I'll probably hit the links again tomorrow and play a whole 18.

I doubt your handicap to rise too much based solely on the difficulty of the course ... it's clearly rated as such. I will guess, though, that you might see a spike at first while just getting comfortable there.

I understand the CR should fully adjust for course difficulty.    What I do know is I'll need at least 3 extra putts per round alone to get in the cup!!..........LOL   ....and this doesn't even account for the difficulty reaching the greens!!  .......if ya know what I mean.

All I have to say is it will be very interesting and I look forward to the new challenge.  The course I left is rated difficult too, but I've played it nearly 1,000 times and have grown comfortable with it.   The greens were flatter, and I could putt them in my sleep with my eyes closed.......(my strength).   I think I'll be in for a rude awakening in 2013.  It will be fun.....

No sweat, I have faith in you!  I think that after 50 or 100 rounds here you will be able to putt them with your eyes closed as well!

Then, think of how much better of a putter you will be everywhere!

Beautiful course......and $2500 for a full, 7 day membership is outstanding! With the exception of 12 and 18, it looks like most of the length is in the par 5's, so it looks hard, but playable for even a relative short hitter like me. You're gonna have a LOT of fun this year!

length isn't the issue..........hitting the ball straight is!!!  LOL.....there's a lot of hazards to negotiate and stray shots=penalty shots/lost balls.   I consider #15 to be the most difficult par5 I've ever played!!  Most people look at par5s as scoring opportunities, but not that hole!   I played a full 18 yesterday, but still haven't kept scores...LOL   It just feels good to just hit some golf shots.

If you hit it long enough to play from the tips then knock yourself out.

Tee it forward is for pace of play and for keeping people in the game for longer. It gives people permission to move up, to stay out there. Part of that is calling the tee boxes by colours instead of by sex and age.

But, let's be real for a second here, unless you're Usain Bolt you are taking longer by playing a different set of tees the rest of your group. If other people in your group are playing from the whites why not be social and join them? I think it is just a practical solution. If I'm with three men, I will back up, if I'm with other women, I will play from the reds. I can enjoy golf regardless of the length of the course, most of golf happens from 100 yards in anyway, there are challenges to be had from every tee box.

Not a question of ego by any stretch, I just find that I rarely get to use my driver and longer irons there. While the shorter home course has done wonders for my short game (the majority of the second shots are 100-120 yards and in with a 3W off the tee), I have found that I struggle a lot more on more traditional length courses now. The lack off "on course" work with my longer clubs seems to easily add another 5-10 strokes for me when I play even a moderate length course.

Just curious, what's par on that course?  I see you don't have an established hcp.  What do you normally score?

The reason that I ask, is that 5800 yds and 67.7/124 at par 70 offers a completely different challenge than the same rating at par 72......

Sorry, it's a par 70. This is my first summer playing golf again after being away from the game for 15 years so I haven't established an official handicap yet (although I hope to do so next year). My typical score at the course ranges between say 92-97. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the course, its fairly tight and the greens are well-bunkered so it really forces you to think through your game. As you can probably deduce from my scores, though, I have a LOT to work on including my driver/long-irons, unfortunately, the course lay-out just doesn't lend itself to using those clubs much.
