It's a hickory shaft. They used to flex a bit.

These are awesome.   I love the one of Mac O'Grady.  The quote is even better.  He might be the best ball striker to ever play the game.  Just could not learn how to putt.

Harry Vardon teeing off at Fall River Country Club on October 20, 1900. The clubs is still there today, and is a few minutes away from my office. I absolutely love this picture (and hope to play there soon).
