My Edel Putter Fitting

Since Erik posted on the forum sometime back about Edel putters and the way you are fit for them, I have wanted to go get one. The thing is they aren't cheap. They aren't much more than an off-the-rac

Well, it took a little longer than I'd hoped, but the putter came today... ...and it's gorgeous: My only (very minor) regret is that I didn't get the "Edel" letters on the front

Question: how long did it take you to get used to yours? I played today and putted horribly -- I felt like I didn't know what putter I was using. Did I overestimate how quickly I'd be able to use it in a round?

Driver:  Titleist 915D2.  4-wood:  Titleist 917F2.  Titleist TS2 19 degree hybrid.  Another hybrid in here too.  Irons 5-U, Ping G400.  Wedges negotiable (currently 54 degree Cleveland, 58 degree Titleist) Edel putter.

Yes.

Takes a hundred or two hundred putts until your old compensations leave.

I am hesitant to respond ... I loved mine from the very first putt, and every one since then ... I could tell an immediate difference ... especially hitting my mark. Disclaimer, my old putter was not fitted for me and I bought it because it was a "good" putter and popular brand. I sucked really really bad with it. Because my Edel was fitted for me, I feel like its comparing apple to oranges. Edit: the sight line really changed things for me, even during the fitting.

Also, and I'm surprised I didn't discuss this with the fitter, how do I hold the Edel putter? I grip it non-overlapped, but I noticed in putting that I am doing this more with my right hand than my left hand (I'm right handed). Is there a preferred grip method? I don't think that will affect the fitting.

Yes. It didn't occur to me until this morning that I might should do otherwise.

I would stick with your regular grip that you were fitted with. Or are you having trouble with the round grip?

Finally got my baby. Played 9 with it today. Speed control is amazing. Still missing right on a few 10 footers but just getting used to lining up straight. Overall love it so far. Dude, what are you doing up at 3 in the morning?! I loved my Edel yesterday....speed and line were good all day...lots of putts that were right on the lip and they didn't fall in but they were longer putts that percentage wise aren't highly likely to go in but I two putted like it was my job.

Playing around with my Game Golf and doing other golf stats stuff, haha.  I'm going to pay for it at the gym later.

Yeah, dude, take away that 7 and have 1 of the three or four putts that you missed by a hair and you likely could have shot 75.

Yup....Ugh...golf, what a fickle game... You forgot to tell everyone that the 7 was on a par 3....and it wasn't even a terrible tee shot. And then to plug right under the lip of the bunker? The Golf Gods didn't want me to shoot 75....

      after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....

      this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
