Tobacco on the Course

With my normal foursome or with friends, I will enjoy a cigar on each 9 - actually the first one is usually lit by 7:30 when I am done with my pre-round range time.

During our monthly tourneys that are randomly paired, I will go without unless riding with a smoker or riding alone.

Actually, this Country was founded on freedom (and tobacco).  Nice try though.

Actually, slavery and tobacco are far more logically related than freedom and tobacco in the context of this conversation.

Freedom is a theoretical foundation of our nation. Tobacco and slavery both economic foundations of our nation. And if you think the slave trade wasn't instrumental in the early development of the United States as an economic power, then this conversation will be over quick.

Back to what I think was the OP's topic...

Beech Nut leaf tobacco.  I just find it relaxing.  Oddly, two of my playing partners chaw the stuff too?!?!  No spitting, etc...  I'd be a huge hypocrite to spit because of how bad I go off on sunflower seeds and cigarette butts laying around tee boxes and greens.

For some reason it helps me chill out.  And has for 25 years and going...

I don't get this mindset.  If going without for a few hours makes you that miserable, why do you still do it?  It isn't that I don't get it, I do.  I'm an ex smoker, happily free of the addiction since 1976 (quit cold turkey after smoking up to 2 packs a day for 13 years).  I wised up early, and the difference it made in my health was dramatic.  I'm not rabidly anti-smoking as long as smokers are willing to admit that their habit is intrusive on the clean air of others and they make an effort to pursue it well away from nonsmokers.  As soon as they start crying about their rights, then I just might have something to say about it.

I've never liked cigars or pipes, as it seems that the prime reason for them is to pollute the air so that the users can compliment each other on the wonderful aroma.... YETCH!!!

And I won't even go into sucking on the stuff.  Enough to say that my wife is a farm girl who wouldn't even consider dating a boy or man who chewed, and the thought of kissing a mouth that's been abused that way turns her stomach.

I happen to live now in a country where there is no restriction on smoking, yet it's never a problem because people here are for the most part naturally respectful of others.  Far more respectful here where they don't have to be than most of my experiences back home in the good old US of A where smokers act like they are the ones who are put upon.

Former smoker . .now I use an electronic cigarette.  It's great on the golf course.  I could be standing 2 feet behind you puffing away and you'd never know it (unless, of course, you turned around and saw me exhale).

People who smoke or chew on the course don't bother me, though.  As long as they don't litter or spit on the greens, of course.

I would also have to disagree with you that "less than one percent of smokers are conscientious and thoughtful people". I'm not sure what skewed your unrealistic opinion, but you've obviously had the misfortune of surrounding yourself with the wrong people, or you're just that guy .

I would also venture to say that too many non-smokers who want to place us smokers in a little glass bio-dome need to realize just how much our tax dollars are contributing towards your entertainment and benefit before you say that your tax money is paying for our fires and what not. The next time you're in a casino, professional sports arena/stadium/field, make sure you thank smokers. That money by far surpasses the money used on idiots starting fires.

I'll 2nd this, I actually have a legion of ex-smokers that hang around me before we tee off on Saturdays because they love and miss the smell if cigar smoke. I may be biased because I have been in the tobacco industry for 20 plus years, but the average non-smoker has no idea how much tax money collected from tobacco subsidises their own tax bill. Cigarette smoking has almost become a class issue and cigarette taxes are pretty much the only way that money gets paid back into the system from the poor. Unfortunately, every rise in tobacco taxes is also detrimental to the economy. Take out taxes and the average pack of Marlboros would cost about $3.60 a pack. There is $10 in federal tax on every carton plus each states additional tax and in some areas there is an additional county and city tax. These taxes cheapen the lower class' s money. Does it look like our government has done a good job spending it?

Some you people on here are such self righteous *******s i think if i ran across you confronting me in the ways you discuss, it would sure end in a fight. And i dont even smoke or chew. I understand the people that do have a right to do so. And anyone thats for regulating or taking away my rights is going to get a 5 finger introduction. One guy on here complained about a concert being to smoky. Get over it thats what almost all live music events are like unless you attend a children's concert. As for people who are actually allergic to the smoke, I think people should be super-courteous and not smoke while around someone like that.  But I don't see how the second hand smoke covering the acreage of a golf course is actually going to kill someone. Since you can't smoke inside anymore - I don't really even notice smokers.

I'm also curious about these golf courses you guys play with these hordes of smokers filling the course with smoke.  I play public courses and often times just get paired up with groups - and I might have a smoker in the group once every couple of months.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

I don't think anyone has said there are hordes of smokers out there or that the entire course is layered in smoke. But there are times where people in the same group have to be in the same area, greens and tee boxes. That's 36 times there is the potential encounter second hand smoke and those areas are usually where the most waiting around and interaction takes place.
