Super interesting thread as I feel like i have some of the same struggles as OP.  Has anyone suggest that he should potentially be engaging his lower body more?   To me it looks like his sequencing is off and that is why he can't get the feeling of getting his hands in front of the ball.  If he keeps his lower body position as is, he would have to literally reach out a mile in front of him to get his hands ahead.

If he clears his lower half in the proper sequence, it makes it a million times easier to maintain the lag angles and get his hands in the proper position to release the club and deliver to the ball.

OP - Try this in front of the mirror.

1) get to top of back swing

2) point the right knee towards the ball -- if you look at this from dtl, you will notice that this will start the initial drop into the slot

3) continue to turn and feel the right arm snug to your hip -- if you look back at your clubhead notice you have maintained your wrist cock and lag angles // at this point the shaft should be near parallel to ground

4) release club through impact zone -- here is where when you release it fully, you will look face on in the mirror and notice that both arms will extend out, crossing the arms (due to rotation) // i get the feeling of my right arm extending down the line <- gets rid of chicken winger "look"

I like to do these checkpoints in my mind when doing slow motion swings and what you will notice is that your hands will end up in the proper position for release.

I always had a problem when people told me to keep my hands ahead of the ball.  The problem was that nobody told me that getting the hands to the proper position ready for release was far more to do with the body than just "getting my hands out there".


Just over a year ago I somehow got into a really good impact position for just the one night I was recording swings. ROFL....

The quest to get back to that.... begins tomorrow because tonight is league night

It's pretty clear from the pictures that you were swinging your arms faster relative to the rest of your body in the left pic. Arms more in sync and thus more in front of your body made your Key #3 better. Weren't you doing that flying wedge drill for a while?

Weren't you doing that flying wedge drill for a while?

I'm not sure about the flying wedge drill thing, but yeah, for that one night I had the right speed for my arms vs body. I'm going to start working on the slower body faster arms feel starting tomorrow because I didn't want to mess with my swing on league night. Even with pretty high winds I was able to salvage a decent round for me and didn't lose any balls. I did have to get my ball out of the water on the last though.

I fought the flip for a long, long time.  All the mechanical stuff I worried about never really helped.  I reduced my backswing a bit and that helped, but a simple swing thought worked wonders.  The problem was that I was too preoccupied on hitting the ball where it is positioned and that's part of what leads you to release right there.  Instead, I thought about throwing the club head at the target.  If you actually throw your club at the target, your release will be right where you want it.  Maybe you should try using your normal swing to throw a club (or a similar substitute) at the target and record that.  I'd be willing to bet your release would be in a much better position.

Interesting idea, unfortunately I don't have a place with enough room to do this. It's definitely something to think about though, thanks for the idea.

Small improvement today. I am focusing on continuing my upper body rotation through the ball. I can see that I need to speed up my upper body rotation maybe? This seems to be a much more effective feel than thinking specifically about speeding up my hands.

Why?

Speed up your HANDS. Get your hands and arms down faster. Forget worrying about rotation. That's just gonna make your hands slower (relatively).

Focusing on speeding up my hands does not have the desired result. I don't know why or how to explain it. I've been trying to come up with a different feel or thought which would result in the desired outcome. What I did today that showed these results was focus on trying to keep my hands in front of my breastbone throughout the swing. Obviously I wasn't completely successful at that but it was a lot closer than it was. That's why I thought speeding up my upper body rotation may help.

I don't see a difference. I don't think I'd be inspired by either of those pictures (I'm not sure which is the "better" one). You should be able to make a swing where you have massive shaft lean at some speed, even if it's 40%.

@Jeremie Boop , dude, you've been trying to do the same thing for nearly two years now. I'll see you on the 18th and we'll do some stuff. Just work on shortening that backswing and that right elbow until then.

@Jeremie Boop this video has what looks like some very good drills for flipping.

Thanks for the video. I did pull one out of there that I could use, since I happen to have the alignment sticks that we were given during one of the TST outings. I like the way it forces me to do what I couldn't seem to find a good thought or feel to do on my own.

I've been using this set up a lot today, slowly working up the swing speed while keeping the alignment stick from hitting me. Finally took it out for a quick 3 swing video.

Still not perfect by any means, but it's a decent improvement. I'll keep working with this aid for the time being.

Just throwing up some video captures for comparisons between 8-18 and today as well as 8-23 and today, and today.

Obviously there are obvious improvements between 8-18 and today. Not really much to say there. However 8-23 and today there are some minor differences. I want to say I'm more synced up with my swing today. My arms don't seem to be quite as far behind in rotation as the 23rd. It looks as though my head is more steady today as well because it's centered and looking straight down at the ball. There is still a good amount of work to do with getting closer to inline impact position, but I think I'm seeing some good improvements now. Of course, it's possible that I'm seeing things incorrectly so I'm open to corrections.

I'm kind of curious about this flip, because when I flip it seems like it's pretty obvious. I feel like my wrists are out of place. Have you tried some of the flat lead wrist drills? Also, Erik is right about slowing down your swing until your wrists are doing what you want them to do. I didn't believe ithat slowing down worked until it started working for my many swing ailments. I still have a long way to go, and I probably should have been posting videos myself doing them but I have been doing them. They work.

Nope, when I swing I "feel" like I'm not flipping, but we all know feel isn't real. I have worked on the flat left wrist drills but for some reason those drills never translated to full swing improvements. I have to admit that it could be that I haven't really done them for long for them to work. Using the alignment stick in the end of one of my old clubs which gives instant feedback is helping a lot though. I feel like if I can use this aid until I can make the partial swings at a pretty decent speed correctly without thinking then it will mean I've made good progress towards getting that flat left wrist/inline impact ingrained.

It promotes a flat left wrist, and may help you with figuring out a good feel for your self..  I am slightly flipping as well, and that's making me very inconsistent with contact lately, so I am going to be trying this out as well..  Let me know what you think!

I tried this drill before my round tonight. It was not bad, but I still prefer the one where you hold the alignment stick or insert it into the end of a club.
