Or you could look at this way: you need to find a way to play about 85,000 rounds of golf.

P.S. Also, the odds are probably a little better in "non-tournament" rounds. So maybe 80,000 rounds will be enough. :D

My handicap when I last calculated it was +1.0. My anti-handicap (worst 10 of last 20 rounds) was 1.8.

An 18.0 index can very easily have an anti-handicap of 25.0 or so. With the wider variation in scores you get greater chances of the stars aligning, even a little, to shoot a score that's -4 or -5 or so far more easily than a low handicapper.

This idea is carried out in the Odds of an Exceptional Tournament Score table from the USGA:

http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/understanding_handicap/articles/deanstable.html

This is true my current handicap is 18.0 and my anti handicap is 26.6.  My last five differentials have been:

29.1

14.3

15.7

23.1

36.9

When I shot the 14.3 I was an 18.3 so I shot 4 under my differential. With the 15.7 I probably was close to 3 under my differential.  If I played these rounds against 10 low handicappers I would have a very good chance to beat them all twice but if I played 5 matches against one low handicapper he would most likely beat me 3 to 2.

When figuring out my anti handicap I also noticed I had a 6 round stretch where my net score was:

63

92

79

73

64

62

That is why net stroke play between more than 4 players of different skill levels doesn't work well at all.  I would also say that a skins game and even a four ball with 3 low and 1 high handicapper benefits the high handicapper especially if they are erratic.

My stats for the past are

Frequency of Score per 18 holes
Year Rounds Double Eagles Eagles Birdies Pars Bogies Doubles Triples Others
2013 3 0.00 0.00 0.00 5.67 6.33 4.00 1.33 0.67
2012 9 0.00 0.00 0.67 4.11 6.89 3.44 2.00 0.89
2011 7 0.00 0.00 0.57 4.71 5.86 4.14 1.86 0.86
2010 9 0.00 0.00 0.33 4.78 7.00 4.22 1.44 0.22
2009 9 0.00 0.00 0.44 3.33 5.00 5.89 1.89 1.44
2008 18 0.00 0.00 0.78 4.11 6.78 4.06 1.06 1.22
2007 21 0.00 0.00 0.38 4.71 7.10 3.19 1.67 0.95
Just as a rough guess I would say I average .5 birdies 4.5 pars and 6.5 bogies per round.  I am and have been very close to an 18 HC for all this time so against a scratch player I would get a stroke on every hole.  I don't think many scratch golfers average .5 eagles and 4.5 birdies per round.  I also doubt that they average 2.75 doubles or worse (that would be my triples or worse) but in that case I hope my teammate has a good hole or in a skins game that the good players tie.

I have to eat a little crow...

The last couple rounds I've played have been boring as shit. Erik was right...I'm improving and nobody else is, so I'm just crushing people (which is great, but still...). I played in a foursome yesterday in terrible conditions and beat second place by 19 strokes. Today I played 9 and won by 5 playing like crap...so I'm starting to realize I may have been wrong...so here it goes...

I figured you'd enjoy it. I like to argue a lot, but have never shied away from saying "well, I was wrong" lol

It's just hilariously coincidental that two of my least competitive rounds came right after I started posting in this thread...

I stick with my original statement that it's still not the same type of competitiveness as a straight up match, but still...I see your points a little clearer now...

I'm still waiting on that first time to be wrong. I thought I was wrong one time but found out I was right. (Just joking, before somebody chokes on something).

I don't have a problem with beating the crap out of people. I always have the ability to play every bit as crappy as whoever I am playing with.

Funny that you said that. Friday I was playing with two players that were clearly better than I could ever be. One is a long time teaching pro and the other used to play for LSU and then on mini tours.

They both started out striping every tee shot right down the middle while I was playing my normal "hit it and try to find it golf". By the end of the round I had them hitting it in the rough just like I was. Maybe they wanted to keep me company over there.

The difference is that most of us would feel that being dragged "down" to a 5.6 is a good thing.

Sadly, my super power doesn't seem to work in reverse. Then again, I did get my ass handed to me today by my buddy who plays off 11. He shot 79 to my 76. My daughter may not get new shoes for the upcoming school year as a result! :-O

I already posted about skins. And I don't get the match play thing either. I don't play 1 on 1 basketball with 8 year olds ...I'll win every time...no competition. Just like I don't play 1 on 1 basketball with 15 year olds ...I'll lose every time...

From this context, I'd assume you are like 13 years old??

No I turn 28 in 20 minutes actually. I'm athletic enough to crush 8 year olds at basketball, but terrible enough to get whooped by high school kids. It was more of a joke.

Chuckle.   Happy 28th.

I am at a age when even 8 year olds will started to beat me in basketball.   I just need to bring my 24 year old son as my teammate.  He has two right feet but still tall enough to post 8 year old.

Never heard of an anti hdcp either, but I checked my worst 10 of last 20...... Was pretty scary; best 10 differentials of last 20 = 28.8.....worst 10 differentials of last 20 = 40.1

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
