What sports don't belong in the Olympics?

They kicked wrestling out of the Olympics which is crap.   IMO, there are many sports that should have been kicked out ahead of Olympics.  If I am an IOC czar, I'd drop the following sports from the Olympics in a heart beat.  In no particular order ...

Ban category:

  • Equestrian - belongs in animal Olympics.  Animals do the work and rich owners gets the medal?
  • Modern Pentathlon - this opens the door for more combination events anyone can think of.  How about combing boxing, marathon, and diving and call it a trimadathon?
  • Race walking - what's next?   Race crawling on all four?  How about race walking side ways?   Race hopping using one leg?
  • Trampoline - isn't it like jumping up and down on bed?
  • Sync swimming - I can see syncrho 100 meter dash, syncrho biking, ...
  • Sync diving - Chinese conspiracy to add a few more medals to their total
  • Artistic Gymnastics - belongs in Cirque du Soleil?
  • Sailing - how about parachuting?  Of course, then comes synchro parachuting.

Reduce medal category:

  • Swimming - American conspiracy to beef up medal total.  See my comment on race walking.  There should be only one style (free or whatever a swimmer can swim fastest).    At least get rid of medley event, and/or team events.
  • Track - see swimming.
  • Canoe/Kayaking - I almost put this on "Ban" category.
  • Cycling - when and how we ended up with 4 different types of bicycling: BMX, road, track, mountain?  Ooooo ... I see combination category coming.
  • Gymnastics - either get rid of all round event or just have it only
  • Rowing - see Canoe
  • Shooting - I almost put this on "Ban" category.

What are your lists?

I like your reasons for taking out Equestrian :-)). Seems odd to take out wrestling. Just seems like the main reason ancient greeks held an olympics.

Animal Olympics lolololol. Just bring back wrestling and make sure, MAKE SURE women's beach volleyball is still there.

In summary, any Olympic sport that you don't understand should be abolished, and the remaining sports should be condensed into one homogenized event that would be easier for you to follow. Never mind that it takes a different type of athlete to excel in a cross-country mountain bike race opposed to a Keirin race on a track, or a marathon runner compared to a 400-meter hurdler. It's all the same thing in your eyes.

Here's one I'd like to see brought back, Tug of War. And they should introduce Potato Sack Race. Seriously bring back women's softball.

What are your lists?

  • Equestrian - but then rich people's kids won't have a chance at the Olympics
  • Modern Pentathlon - It would be more fun if they shot at each other, HUNGER GAMES!
  • Race walking - agreed
  • Trampoline - recently added and agreed.
  • Sync swimming - OMG!  Worst sport ever except with Martin Short and Harry Shearer do it.
  • Sync diving - ZZZZZZZZZ
  • Artistic Gymnastics - It used to be called rhythmic gymnastics.  It is dumb and for only real gymnastic drop outs.
  • Sailing - keep but reduce the number of events and make them sail to the games!

  • Swimming - Keep. It is the second biggest viewing draw.
  • Track - First sport.  Will never be removed or reduced.
  • Canoe/Kayaking - too many variations, reduce.
  • Cycling - I used to race, but I agree.  It needs to be paired down.  there are too many track event.
  • Gymnastics - Never happen.  By far the biggest audience draw.
  • Rowing - reduce the number of events.
  • Shooting - HUNGER GAMES!

I would add:  Ping Pong and Badminton to the banned list.

Can you believe Ping Pong ranked higher than Golf, by Olympic Committee and other sports analyst, in most demanding sports? http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2857006

The table tennis they play at the Olympic level only slightly resembles what you played in your uncle's rec room as a kid.

Table Tennis & Badminton at Olympic level are hard sports.  Perhaps, we should combine tennis, table tennis, and badminton as one event and call it a pingathon.

( If anyone checked out Asian games, some games they include are simply stupid.  Don't get me started on this but maybe one day, I should. )

BTW folks, I started the thread in half jest.  I didn't mean to offend anyone who plays trampoline, artistic gymnastics, etc..  So, keep your response light, witty.   But if you have a real good suggestion, please contact IOC .

This whole Olympic mess started when hosting nation was allowed to add a sport.   This is how some of the sports got added and never came off (no such luck for baseball).   I sure like to see baseball added.  Golf is recently added I can see people calling for bowling (already an Asian game medal event).   If bowling is added, billiard will be added (already an Asian game medal event, I think).   If billiard is added, then ... well ... you get my point .

Tug of War - too brutal. I can see arms being torn off.    However, I'd like to see nations settling their dispute with it instead of going to real war.

No on Potato Sack Race but maybe on Softball & Baseball.   Seriously, not enough nations play these which is one of the reasons why they were dropped.  The other big reason being that it does not garner good global TV rating.

thought it was funny.

I think anything that requires a judge to give a score should not be an Olympic sport.

I want only sports with a definitive winning strategy, score more goals, cross the line first, knockout your opponent etc.

I would love to see a team golf event with a 4 man Ambrose best ball comp. Imagine the scores possible! I think rounds of 54 might be possible!

Saying that the horse does all the work in equestrian is the equivalent of saying that the car does all the work in Nascar.....  I agree though, removing wrestling is just plain wrong.

Sorry, but golf does not belong as an Olympic sport.

I don't know about Nascar but I know a bit about horse racing.   Jockeys who get better horses have better winning percentage.  Sure, there are exceptional jockeys who can still win with lesser horses.  But horse's ability prevails more often than what a jockey does.   Often, jockey merely follows trainer's instruction on how to run a race.   If horse racing is an Olympic event, would jockey get the medal?  horse?  owner?  trainer?

True story.   Late Moon Sun Myung, the (in)famous former Unitarian church leader, had many children, 14 all told.  Years back, several of them got interested in Equestrian.  They were able to buy good (and expensive) equestrian horses, trained a bit, and qualified as Korean national team members and participated in two Olympics.   I think they even won medals in Asian games.  I don't think they went to Olympics because they were good athletes.   As I recall, it caused a minor stir when it was reported how much they paid for their horses.

    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
    • I've got my pain mostly under control and the meds are working.   I'd like to join.
    • I would definitely attend if my calendar allows.
    • Finland: I've played Mid-Night Golf in Finland. Really cool. I looked at the schedule for my week out there and I saw that we were teeing off at 9PM... Feels weird, 9 PM tee time. But it was really great. We finished well after 1AM and sat around and drank on the golf course terrace. It was cool. It's really easy to loose track of time when the sun doesn't set.  Here's a picture of me in Finland hitting my approach on the final hole. It's roughly 1:30AM in this photo.  Egypt: Another cool experience was playing golf in Egypt. The entire course is sand. The greens are called browns, cuz they are just sand with oil poured on them and pounded down a bit. Your ball gets kind of oily when you putt, but the caddy cleans it for you after each hole. You carry around a little piece of fake grass (maybe 2 foot square) and place your ball on it each time before you hit. That is except when you go into a sandtrap. The sandtraps are just areas marked off where you don't get to use your little piece of astro-turf. Sometimes they are dug down a bit to make a bunker, sometimes not.  Spain: No special events or anything, but I played a bunch of golf in Spain in the mid-1990's. At that time Spain's economy wasn't doing the best and Europe hadn't quite switched to the Euro. So Spain was using the Peseta. The country of Spain has some incredibly breathtaking courses. (incredible scenery in general) But because of the conversion from the dollar to the Peseta (If memory serves it was 150 to 1), I got to play them for what I remember as being incredibly inexpensive prices. Gorgeous country and really nice people.  Holland or The Netherlands: I lived for a couple of years in what's called The Flevoland in Holland. It's one of the Dutch provinces and it's all land that was recovered from the sea. So, it's all under sea-level. One of the courses I played a few times out there had flags on every hole to show just how deep the water would be if it wasn't for the dams.
