Play the new irons?

I am waiting for delivery of new irons this week - scheduled to arrive tomorrow. I'm also playing a round Friday at Spanish Bay (Monterey, CA) with a group of guys I haven't played with in a long time and am really hoping to play well (last time we played I was probably a 40 cap). If the irons arrive in time would you play them or would you wait until you've had a chance to play a few rounds and dial them in? I could see where jumping onto a challenging course with brand new irons fresh out of the box might be a disaster. On the other hand I can hardly stand to look at my old irons since hitting the new ones at the store... What would you do?

Play with new iron so that you will have an excuse if you don't play well ;-) .

Without knowing how big of a jump it is from you old to new club, it's hard to tell.

Tough question!!!! I guess you can't put off the game? Just kidding, mostly. Only your gut can answer the question. Here are a few things to consider perhaps. How different are the new clubs from the old ones? Are the new ones more "players" clubs that are likely to be less forgiving of slight mishits due to unfamiliarity? Are the lofts different so you may be unsure which club to use from given distances? Are the swing weights different so they will just feel "different" when you hit the course? Those are all reasons to play with your old sticks. A lot of this could be mitigated if you have an opportunity to spend some quality warm-up time on the range without pooping yourself out for the actual game. Or it could confirm that you need to leave the newcomers in the trunk for the day. Go have fun, and don't second guess the choice once you get going!

LOL...yes. He's only still up there because of 2012.  If he doesn't get his act together quick, he'll drop like a rock in 2014!!

I had the same problem earlier in the year and I chose to go with the new ones. Best move for me. I ended up winning the day.

When it comes to new equipment I am like a kid at Xmas. Waiting to find out if I like it isn't an option for me. I keep grips, tape and solvent in my desk and have been known to sneak out for a quick 9 after buying something new.

      I added to total today by hopping it in on the first hole for an eagle. A short par 4, I hit 4 wood to 110. With a little breeze in my face I hit a 50 degree gap wedge to 2 feet and watched it hop into the hole for an eagle 2!

      Day 14 (September 18).  Morning practice, despite questionable weather (it's raining).   Worked on chipping at first, including run-ups with UW and PW;  I've noticed lately some of my near-GIRs are missing forward, with nothing but grass ahead of me, but 20-30 yards to the pin.  After a few misadventures putting those lately, I wanted to at least get a feeling for what a 30-yard chip shot that doesn't have the variance of my quarter lob wedge would feel like.  I still think "putt when you can putt" is right, but... I am less sure I have a 30 yard putt in me.  Range time also, of course, same routine as the past week or so (drill, 3-4 slow shots, etc).   Did not get to the putting green as it was starting to come down a bit more. Darn, it really is raining.  And I thought today would be a perfect day to play, seeing as how it's 9-18 and all.

      I'm in the same boat.  I think the last team event I got really excited for was the 2019 Presidents' Cup.  When I first got into golf, the Ryder Cup was an event (one among many) I used to plan my schedule around to make sure I'm able to watch it.   I'm not sure I realized how close it was until I saw this thread pop up.
