I prefer interlock. I started out interlocking but switched to overlap for about two years before going back to interlock. My problem is that I have big palms and little babby fingers. The club slipped out of my hand too much with the overlap.

It really boils down to comfort, like everyone else was saying.

When I first started to take lessons I was taught to interlock.  After reading some books I decided to give overlap a try and found it much more comfortable.  I have used an overlap grip for last 18 months and when I try to go back to interlock it just feels too uncomfortable and more restrictive.

I'm kind of the reverse of this. I started with and overlap grip and used that for a long time. However, I needed to make some grip changes (mine was far to strong) but I found it hard to make those changes with an overlap grip so I changed to interlock… I've tried overlap a few times since then and it just feels weird.

With my driver and 3 wood, I seem to hit the ball way more consistently using overlap. But when hitting my irons, I'm more consistent using interlock.  But I dont like the idea of switching back and forth on the course... Any thoughts?

Jack Nicklaus (I think) said something to the effect of interlock being better for smallish hands, like his. I've found it works for me as well; I have a large palm, but short fingers, and interlocking feels a lot more comfortable.

But, then again, most pros use overlap.

I would suggest using the one that feels the most comfortable.

I recently, the past two months switched to interlocking. I find it allows me to keep my right hand from getting to strong. I find it to be more secure feeling.

Interesting. For me my right hand wants to slide over to the strong side whenever I try interlock.

In working through my serious outside-in problem with an instructor this season, I switched to overlap to help my right side stop being too strong. It has resulted in beautiful results after adjusting and practicing like crazy. Finally getting consistent lag in my swing. I'm starting to birdie holes... hand position is everything.

I learned with a interlocking grip after few years went to overlap and still have it

One thing for sure a overlap grip will require more maintenance to keep a solid grip..

it can get a bit sloppy without realising it..

Once and a while I hit some balls with a interlocking grip just to see but return to

overlap...

I'm pretty sure it does come down to what you are comfortable with. I wear a men's small glove and interlocked, but switched to overlap about a year ago and (for me) it definitely gives better 'feel' on my standard size grips.  I found that interlock was putting my right hand too much under the club, and if I tried to move my hand more to the side I was barely interlocked anyway.

Mine is probably a bad example in that I switched from a ten finger grip. Interlock just didn't work for me, too drastic a change.

It takes one finger off the shaft and evens out the the grip to reduce right hand dominance. Actually probably good with people who have big strong hands and hook the ball from to much right hand. I use overlap because I have average hands and need all the fingers on the shaft for control.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
