Tiger has risen back to #1 in the world. Tiger won 5 tournaments last year. Tiger was a flagstick away from a major. His coaching is fine guys. He hasn't won as much with Foley? He's older now and injured. Still wins. Not fair to compare Tiger at 20 to Tiger now and say its all coaching. Coaching is fine.

Who said it's all coaching?

Flagstick away?

Seriously?

Maybe... who knows?

But we are 4 years into Foley ... maybe it will happen this year. My opinion, and we all have 'em -- maybe it's time for a former player to work with him at his age. Tiger is not an easy student. He seems to take to players.

You seem to have a hardon for Grant.-He might use Grant, sure, but he probably feels hes doing fine with Foley. WHats Grant know about winning on the current-day PGA TOur that Tiger doesnt know?- Or winning a major?[quote name="Mr. Desmond" url="/t/73010/tiger-woods-driving-problems-really-dude-really/36#post_960034"]Who said it's all coaching? Lighten up.-You clearly like Grant Waite even though his career was surpassed by a few thousand players. He barely has any experience winning-And none winning a major.[quote name="Mr. Desmond" url="/t/73010/tiger-woods-driving-problems-really-dude-really/36#post_960068"] Take it anyway you want. I don't know what Foley is doing with these guys but he didn't get to this position just with good advertising. Tiger and Rose have had injuries but Rose was really playing well until he got hurt. I think Tiger is playing better because he took a little off his swing to ease up on his back.

At this point I don't think Tiger needs a traditional swing coach.  Foley, Haney and Harmon have all said he's very educated on golf mechanics and theory.  Foley is a good fit because he's going to approach Tiger differently than a guy that's looking to "fix" Tiger.  Tiger needs someone that will provide him feedback on his swing when he wants it and keep him mentally stimulated.

I read an article in Golf Magazine that made sense.  They said that while Tiger's personal problems and injuries have slowed him down, they can't be 100% responsible for his difficulty in winning a Major.  The article contends that other golfers studied how Tiger won over the years and realized that he made shots no one else could as consistently.  The top players have now added those shots to their arsenal and the gap has closed significantly.

When you consider that Tiger is barely top 50 in driving distance and the other guys are hitting the same crazy iron shots he can, it's not going to be as easy for him to win like he used to against the best golfers in the world.

If I had the ability to hit everything straight I would probably hit long irons off the tee to allow me to hit full irons into every green.

I admit I am not a great player but I too have difficulty hitting accurately from 60-70 yards so I usually aim to be either 90-100m from the pin for a SW or 120m for a PW.

I also hit long irons or 5w from the tee to allow this distance to be left. I could hit driver but if you think about your next shot and not just the shot you are currently hitting you will quickly lose strokes from your handicap.

If you are even mildly accurate off the tee, even being in the first cut of rough on most fairways then course management will lose you plenty of strokes.

You have said you can hit a driver up to 300yds straight, do you ever try to move the ball left or right? This is when you will start to have issues with accuracy

I think that is it. When Tiger is on the course it looks like he is trying to kill the ball, except yesterday. Much different than the fluid swings we see on the range.

I don't know what was up with that flub approaching 18, though.

Exactly what I meant. It is like he's trying to hang with the likes of DJ and Bubba. I think he's so competitive about power that it negatively affects his body. But hell what do I know, I am just a internet hack.

Back to TIger ...

During his Hank days, I swung away with futility under the direction of a couple of his head instructors, and I heard things. Hank would put on Instructing the Instructor Schools and tell stories that has relevance here ... he was surprised that Tiger was a nervous player. When he went to the first tee, he was full of nerves. He was perfect on the range and clinics, but the guy had nerves on the course.

Look at Tiger on the course now. Does he look like a zen-ful guy? Laidback? Do you see him complaining a lot about his inability to "get" the speed of the greens? He's had cussing incidents throughout his career. You'd think he'd come to some sort of acceptance of imperfection .

He had a wonderful short game and long iron game under Hank -- Tiger's ability to scramble was phenomenal. He had that scramble ability before Hank.

I remember a quote where Hunter Mahan stated that Tiger was a terrible ball striker before Tiger got to Foley. So the thought comes up, "What did Hank do with Tiger?" But that's in the past.

As to Foley, he has a thankless task. He's got a guy who will be the most prolific PGA Tour Winner when his career is over, and has him when many are hitting their prime - mid to late 30's - and his player has performed, but not to his previous levels.

I criticize him because Tiger hasn't won a major, but he may be doing a masterful job at mechanics. He seems to be knowledgeable of the biomechanics of the swing, and the technology. But no one seems to have settled Tiger down mentally. That head must be a tough one to crack. Many times, a guy in his 30's, like Tiger, the ego is too big to help him mentally. He's got to fall and not blame others. You'd think the Shanksgiving incident would have brought him back to earth mentally. Maybe it did in some ways, but perhaps not on the golf course.

There is something in Tiger that prevents him from achieving his former consistency -- is it age at an age when most guys see the physical skills deteriorating but the mental skills and strength increasing. That mental edge gets them over the top. Could it be that Tiger trusts no one and therefore is difficult to reach?

Don't know. But something is amiss, and it may not be about Foley. Can Foley help him where it's really needed? Not until Tiger allows him inside...

He's human, and the game is hard. Obviously something gets to him when he gets on the course. Fear of failure? Why does he swing so much harder on the course and spray it everywhere? We all have trouble replicating what we do on the range and it is all mental. These are simple things that are difficult to overcome, and a swing coach is not the answer to the mental part of the game IMO. He's got to work this out himself, beginning with his crashes on the weekends in majors. Blaming Foley for Tiger Woods' (Tiger Fricking Woods!) mental issues a strawman. We are not talking about a 16 year old here trying to find his way.

Even so, the guy won 8 times the last 2 years, while being injured part of that time. Everybody is all over DJ's jock and that is what he has won his whole career, for example. He has set a bar way too high for so long and maybe it is getting to him.

Well, I don't know. Tiger has been protected all his life and may have been surrounded by "yes" men -- no doubt. Overprotected, who knows his mental maturity? Just speculating here...

Isn't it Foley's job to get his player to perform? Whether it is mental or physical? Heck, for all we know, Foley may have tried to get him help. Sorry if my posts are nuanced. The "blame," if any, goes to every member of Team Tiger, including Tiger. They take the glory ... and must take the accountability, allocated by Tiger...

    • "Positional" shots? How do we do that? I am using the V3 and edit on my laptop.
    • No, I'm not talking about "six footers uphill, slightly right to left." I'm going to indulge myself and talk about my favorite putts that I've ever hit. In no particular order… #9 at Whispering Woods The hole was cut middle left, and I was back right with about 40 feet to the hole, and six to eight feet of break. @DrizZzY (he'll be a semi-common theme here) was about 25' from the hole and he said "Do you need me to mark that" as his ball was really close to my line. I saw the line really, really clearly and, like the cocky jerk I am, said something like "no, leave it. I think I have to just miss your ball to make this." I saw my ball as having to pass within a few millimeters of his ball… and going in the middle. Well, I hit the putt, and as it passed his ball missing it by maybe 1.5cm… I said "ahhhhh, pulled it a little…" and… the ball fell in the left-center of the hole. I smirked at Sculley and he just said "you're such an ass." 🤣 I know I said in no particular order, and that might be true for the rest… but this one is clearly tops on my list. I saw the line so clearly, it was a touchy, delicate putt… and I knew I'd pulled it just that little bit, and my speed was perfect. His ball was fifteen feet from mine, and the putt broke 8'! Might be the greatest putt, given the call I made, I'll ever hit. #13 at Lawsonia Links I cared about a few rounds in Wisconsin on our 2021 trip (thanks again @cipher), and the 13th had gotten me a bit. I was in a bunker, and someone not NOT named @DeadMan had told me I could just chip a 7I out and still be fine… well, the 7I left me 250 in, so my 3W finished just left of the green… and about 10' below the green. I hit a decent pitch to 25' or so… this putt broke only about 2-3', but burying that one was satisfying as it kept my "no sixes in Wisconsin" streak alive. It was after this putt that someone said something like "You remember how you said you felt about Tiger at the 1997 Masters? That's how we feel right about now." It was one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. 😄 #14 at Whispering Woods Two putts are tied here. On one, Sculley and I hit tee shots to a back hole near the front of the green. I was a foot off the front, he was a few feet on. As we were getting back into the cart, I said "putting contest from here." He replied "Well, I lost." I made the 75-footer. The other time, the pin was front-left. I was mostly middle right, barely on the green, putting across it from about 65 feet. The putt broke a good ten feet. Sculley was short left of the hole, and for the last 20 feet of the putt, I looked at @DrizZzY and the face he made — disgust, annoyance, resignation — as the putt tracked directly toward and eventually into the hole was one of the funniest and most satisfying expressions I've ever seen on the golf course. I watched him, not my ball, for the last 15-20 feet of its roll. Sorry Sculley! #9 at Tan Tara Golf Course It was my 77th stroke in my second round of the PAT. It was a ten-footer, broke a few inches, and was destined for the bottom of the cup the instant I hit it, all to pass the PAT on the number in my first attempt. (Tan Tara is now Pendleton Creek.) #17 and 18 at The Old Course, St. Andrews On the 18th, I hit it to about four feet from about 40 yards out, up and over the Valley of Sin, from the fairway. I didn't even really consider chipping or pitching it, because who does that? Not there, not me. On #17, I had about a 15 or 18 footer, after playing a 6I from 180 that flew (on purpose) only about 90 yards, and took about 15 steps to run over humps and hollows before coming to a stop on the right portion of the hole. My caddie said "I see only one or two birdies a year on the Road Hole, so, well done." Lifetime scoring average on 17 at the Old: 3. I'll take that. Far Hole (#?), Putting Course at Streamsong Black @kpaulhus and I were screwing around. Calling out holes, and tee locations. I walked over to the fringe of the nearby green on the Black course… We putted from the fringe in case we scuffed the ground a bit. Well, I chose a putt from the fringe to the far side of the 18-hole putting course. In Google Earth, I measured the putt just now at nearly 400 feet. As in… 130 yards. I hit the stick. My ball stopped less than two feet from the hole. The other diners let out a loud shout when I smacked it, and looked way over at me and yelled out "it hit the stick!" Kyle lost that hole. And most of the other ones. 😉  Some stats: Count: 8 Shortest: 10 feet. Longest: 130 yards. Average length: ~93 feet. But, y'know… Those are my favorite putts. What are yours?
    • I have one still sitting in a box my son gave me for Christmas.  For a while, I used an app on my watch, but it drained the phone battery . We have Markers at 180 ,135 and 90M , and generally I am close enough to one of them to get a fairly rough indication of how far.  Also, for a while now ,I walk into town and back at weekends, approximately 5 mile round-trip . I’ll start a walk on my watch, and on the way home when the watch ticks over to .10/.90 etc I’ll pick a street light ,lamp post , sign , and guess how far, normally anything up to about 100 m, I have now got very good at estimating distances, especially up to 50 or 60M.
