nice job analyzing your own mistakes, Moppy!

I was trying out some PW, 7i, 4i, and driver at the range.

I think I was squeezing the driver grip too tightly it seemed, preventing enough wrist action for power in my golf swing...

When I took the lightest grip I could take, with driver, I was hitting mild straight fades, or straight shots with the driver...

But then again I gotta get more upwards strike even so, I feel...

Seriously, you beat the odds.

http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/understanding_handicap/articles/deanstable.html

The most likely explanation is that you are capable of much better scores than 100s, and that your actual handicap is not that large. If I had to guess you are probably in the 18 handicap range, but just make lots of mistakes that rack up your normal score.

Today I went to Bethpage (the blue Course) things went well... It was back to the real world for me.

First tee shot awful, I apologized to my playing partners, ended up shooting a 7 on the first hole.

Things got going in a positive direction, nothing great, but nothing bad, till 7,8 & 9 where the wheels came off the bus for a 55 for the first nine.

10-18 nice = Nothing great (okay my Putting saved me) 3 pars, 2 bogies, 3 double bogies, 1 triple bogie (10th) my a solid 47.

It's my 3-4 rescue clubs that I couldn't hit today for beans. If I had hit them better that would have been 5 strokes off easy.

Sevens happen, no need to apologize for them, just put it out of your mind and tally up the scores at the end. It only makes you feel worse to apologize for them and reinforces bad thoughts as you approach your next tee shot.

Don't add up any scores until the end of the round, or at least the front 9.

Have fun on your next round!

Thats what I learned today^

Also I need to apologize to you guys for my math skills. I entered my score into excel and got a pleasant surprise = 98.

As mentioned earlier, my chipping and putting really saved me today, 33 total putts

Another reason to add up after the "heat of the battle". ;-)

Have fun tomorrow.

Went out today for the first time in a year after a couple recent range sessions.  Gave up keeping track of the score after I topped my first three shots 25 yards and just played.  Proceeded to top probably 50% of the rest of my shots.  The other half were so nice though!  I guess that's why we all keep coming back anyways.  Managed a couple pars and bogeys when I stayed down on the ball.  Short game was a lot better than it was last year since I've been practicing in the yard a lot.  It's nice to see the results show up on the course!

I'll focus on keeping my head still at the range and hopefully limit the miss-hits next round.  Looking forward to getting back out there!

I did not match the 43 I shot earlier this week but shot a 98 today.  Home course 69.2/116

6008 yards.

No penalty shots which is one of my goals,

Muffed about six chips  but made three scoring chips. which are chips that leave kick -ins.

Need to continue working on the chips.

Only had one three putt but was chipping on most holes.  No GIR's

My other things i work on is keeping my  hand in front of my chest and swinging through the ball.

Hit enough good shots to keep me coming back.

Well, I played nine last night and my recent success on the range disappeared until the 6th hole, when I dialed it way back. I kept pulling up on my swing, topping iron shots and slicing the woods. The last three holes my shots were all decent. I was drooling for those shots I hit at the range, and was trying too hard to impress my buddy with my new skills, I guess.  I finally did hit a couple straight, or at least with a manageable fade. We were playing best ball. Hardly any of my shots were used until the round was half over. Either I have to find a way to raise stakes on the range, or calm down on the course.

Just played again today, and after shooting a 98 last week, I am sad to announce that I have regressed a little this week by shooting a 111. My putting was just dreadful today and I was hooking everything badly (considering I normally have a slight fade to my swing). But not all was lost. Had 3 good shots from inside the bunkers. I also had this great opportunity. Par 4, this is where my tee shot ended up after just missing the fairway left by about 10 yards. Took my hybrid and just tried to punch it out towards the green and let it roll as close as possible. Then had a nice pitch shot and was able to save par. Then follow it up on the next hole, a short 122 yd par 3, and ended up with a 6. Just don't know how that is possible lol.

That's just golf. :-P

There's always the next hole, next nine and next time.

Yeah, I just find it funny that I can come through in tough situations like that but then blow up on easier holes. Its a mental thing really.

-I played 45 strokes front-9... It was pretty amazing to score that well... Now the course was not that long in yardage, but I was playing middle tees so there you go. Yardage was 5000 yards I think, so definitely not that long.

-I had some really nice pitch shots and chip shots.

-It's just that the back-9 was slightly worse! :-P

-back-9, I had tons of penalty strokes sadly. Lost some balls on the back-9.

-it wasn't strokeplay, but instead stableford scoring, therefore the overall round of 18 went still rather well, due to my excellent front-9.

-stableford points were 43 total, from 18-holes.

1 birdie

4 pars

7 bogeys

2 double-Bs

1 triple-B

3 holes with no score, it would have been 10 strokes I reckon had I holed them out.

Whatever it's worth.....

I read that the reason why you tend to do better when you're in a tough spot, is because you tend to visualize the shot more, rather than [over] think about the mechanics of your swing.

I finally shot double digits on a hometown course. It's been five long years of golfing anywhere from 130-105. I shot a 52 on the front and a 46 on the back. My first birdie of the year came on a skilled chip shot from 60 yards out that somehow went in the hole. At least three wasted birdies messed up with three putts. Pars:2 Bogeys: 6 Birdies:1 Penalties:1 I lost only 1 ball today. My best shots came when I could relax and not think about hitting the ball, just trusting my swing instead. Now I'm thinking of calling in sick tomorrow and joining some friends for a round.

I've only ever broken 100 playing executive courses.  My last game was a 108 playing the senior tees on a par 72.  I would have scored better if it weren't for a few blow-up holes (2 8's and a 9).  Most of the holes were 5's and 6's, although I did par one par 3 hole.  My goal right now is to average 6 or less on each hole.

Ouch, I shot a 117 yesterday, pretty rough. I walked a difficult course with big elevation changes. It was a pretty wooded course but only had one lost ball. I was playing with my father in law which was fun but I was trying to hard.

It is strange.  I'll have a blow up hole and score an 8 on a par 3, only to then make par on the next hole, a par 5.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
