  1. 1. Would you rather see…

    • Each match contested for a single point (match play)?
      1
    • Each match contested as a Nassau, with points available for the front, back, and total (all match play)?
      6

BTW, we'll likely pick the teams by late June or so… if you're interested, post or something here, and let us know.

East coast vs. west coast in Phoenix, AZ early September is the current plan… Gonna be a GREAT time.

Yep we're going to have a lot of fun, please post in this thread if you're interested. Some of the "criteria" below, Erik and I have decided we won't be playing.

I currently sit at this:

Mike and I are captains.

Two teams of six or eight. I don't know whether Mike or I will play.

Handicap index limit of about 10 or so? It's tough to play as a 3 (or whatever) against a 17.

Find a host course to have us out there for three days.

Play true Ryder Cup style matches: four balls, foursomes, and singles.

West coast the first time around, east coast the second time around, etc. The dividing line is roughly the Mississippi.

@Pretzel are you going to be 18 by the time this thing rolls around (early September), and if so can you get out to AZ?

I imagine if he is 18 that starting college (?) might take precedent?

@Pretzel , what sayest thou?

For consideration:

Friday Matches

3 x Foursomes (alternate shot), 3 x Fourball (best ball)

Total: Six Points

Saturday Matches

3 x Foursomes (alternate shot), 3 x Fourball (best ball)

Total: Six Points

Sunday Matches

Six singles matches… - OR -

Twelve singles matches?

In other words, if R = Red and B = Blue, and the # is just the number of the player on the team…

R1 and R2 can each play a simultaneous match against B1 and B2. Or it can just be B1 vs. R1, R2 vs. B2. And C3 vs. PO.

Singles matches would be worth either 6 of 18 points (33%) OR 12 of 24 points (50%).

The Ryder Cup has 12 singles matches out of 28 points (43%).

The Presidents Cup has 12 singles matches out of more points… 34 (35%).

I like the idea of each singles match being competitive two ways, but at the same time, it seems almost to somewhat bastardize the spirit of match play. You can't concede a stroke if your guy is also playing someone else.

So I'm leaning toward the 6 points, straight up, 33% method.

What do you think?

I kinda like the 50% because it means there is no shut out scenario for the final day. Odds of losing all the matches Thursday and Friday and then winning all the Sunday matches to tie is extremely low. Still I think it would add in more drama that way.

If the 12 points means it is 2 points per match for different scenarios (match play or net score) to make up the difference I would go with 6 points straight up. I rather each match be towards one singular goal. Not sure if there can be 2 x 6 single matches, so play twice on Sunday.

I agree.

Well, I do too, but I thought I'd ask. :) I was hoping everyone would basically say "straight up." So much easier and less stressful.

I have another idea coming for that.

There won't be a shutout. C'mon… :)

The only way a shutout happens if the East Coast shuts out the West Coast

Nate's too nice. He'd concede a match.*

I wonder how many cans of sun tan spray and Gatorade I can fit in my bag?

Yeah you gotta watch me, I may concede a match up 3 with 4 to play.

Okay, so now that we all agree on the options…

How about we triple the number of points available in each match?

How?

A Nassau.

I've added a poll to the thread.

Hmm, sounds interesting.  I'll have to think about that.

Agree with everybody on the 6 singles matches though ... I want to go one on one against somebody.

Just hire two caddies, one to pull a cooler full of gatorade and towels on ice and another to carry your clubs. Maybe a third to carry you just in case. :-D

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
