You can lower your hands without laying them back/open. If they’re laying back they won’t roll over the other way mid downswing.

So, in the full swing you're trying to do a few things:

  • Besides the chest falling forward stuff that's more relevant for the irons…
  • Lower your hands.
  • Get the back of the left hand facing the target more at impact.

The latter thing is a little of two things:

  • Twisting the wrist slightly. You can't do this as much as others, nor do you need to, as palmar flexion goes a long way.
  • Rolling the left forearm so the back of the left hand, or the axis through both the radius and ulna point more toward your left hip and the shaft is inline with them (in the same plane, rather than the hands being shoved way forward) by impact.

Laying the club down a bunch at the top makes it tougher for the left arm radius/ulna to rotate the way they need to as it sends them the other direction. So a little is fine, but be careful that it's not too much, as it'll have trouble reversing, and I'm not sure you have the palmar flexion to overcome it.

I worked on these this morning. I think I’ve got the stance down, more upright, arms straight down. In the 6 iron video below, I think I am flexing too much, but I am not laying off as much in rehearsal. I am trying to mimic the video you sent me. Maybe my hands should go down closer to my body? I am checking the radius/ulna line at a couple of points here.

For the driver, I think I am overdoing the flexion here which causes laying off, correct? this is a really slow swing.

Worked on my feels again today with driver. It almost feels like I’m casting with my right hand down behind me. I’m not actively trying to palmar flex either. Below is a DTL swing about 20%. I’m not  trying to flatten but it is anyway. The drill @iacas gave me is more pronounced, more down with the head. My right elbow in this one seems to be leading too, which may help cause the flattening more that I want.

The crying you heard was my inner child trying to get this right.

Face on looks a bit better than previous practices. This swing is about a 20%. I’m also focusing on the radius/ulna line pointing at my left hip at impact.

This last swing was 50%.

Worked on the same piece again today with mostly driver and slow swings. The feel is sort of like trying to drive the face down at the ground from the top. Below is a 50% swing.

Face on looks ok here with another 50% swing.

I’m still a little off when I speed it up more. Playing tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes.

Went to the range to do a little soul searching and figure out why all this work I’m doing is not helping on the course more.  I feel I’m making progress, but on course the driver seems less controllable. I worked on the drill for a bit, then worked on alignment. The OTT swing path in my videos bugs me. So I went back to a previous alignment piece to help swing out more and do the wrist piece I’m working on.

It appears with the driver I do best having my aim point line 15-20 yards right of my foot line at around 200 yards. Flight is then a higher push draw or slight fade. I aim the face slightly right of target but open to my stance. With this setup, I’m swinging out and feel I can control the face with my new piece better. I also feel I can swing with more power this way. Not sure why I got away from this alignment. Sometimes a stupid monkey is really stupid. I focus so much on one thing that others slip.

The kicker is I need to work on this alignment piece. I’m a little OCD WRT lines. The rope line at the range gets in my head. So I need to block all that out and setup correctly. Same on the course with tee markers. I have to block all that out and line up with my feet left and face slight right of target, the center of the fairway.

With other woods, the same setup works too but a little bit less out. If I close the face down too much, it will draw too much. With irons, I still try to swing out, but the ball ends up closer to my toe line, so I setup a little more square. If I set up too open, I will over draw it. If I open the face too much, I hit a weak push.

In these dog days of summer, and crappy rounds at times, I keep having to remind myself I do this because I love golf. Winter isn’t too far away and I’ll be back to freezing my tail off practicing. So having to drink 6 bottles of water, wear rain gloves and sweating 5 pounds walking 18 is not a bad thing.

We've all been there. (Well, I actually don't know that. But I can tell you I've been there.) 

Sometimes it takes a while to translate range success to on course success.

I thought of you yesterday, brother.

I tried to bring the swing I was hitting on the range to the course, and it went badly. I immediately reverted. 

My new habits are just not ingrained well enough to replace the old habits. So, I spent the first half of the round working out the how and not the where and that's no way to play golf. Personally, I have to get back to the range and keep working on strengthening the new habits. 

Golf is hard.

Record your on course swing. When swinging like shit I run into the same culprits - I tend to early extend and shove the shaft forward with my hands. Then either I save it by a 'roundhouse' armsy pull or throw the club at the ball and slice it. 

There are not many other things. Solution is always the same if I can get my wits about me. Find softness in upper body, slow down, swing with patience. Same old basic shit.

Remember, our swings on the course are not that different regardless of how bad the ball flight is compared to the range. We just tend to short circuit the motion with quickness and anxiety.
