Concealed Carry on The Course

This really wasn't meant for a debate on the appropriateness of concealed carry on a course, but it looks like thats where its going. I agree that I probably should have taken this to a defensive carry forum, but i wanted answers from golfers, so i decided to give it a shot.

Whatever you do on the course is your business. You're well within you're right to carry apparently so who cares what people think? I just hope you never have to use it. If I lived in Texas, I'd probably have a gun because it's more accepted there.

Offer them a beer and crack a joke to calm them down. Maybe a half hearted apology for whatever they think I did wrong, it's a golf course not Omaha Beach. Damn sure not going to reach for a gun. In my 46 years, some of which were lived very hard, I've never felt so threatened a gun would have been the answer. And that includes the times it's come to fighting, yes I've been in a few.

This guy was pretty hot. You would have thought we were beating on his kids or something the way he came out. If I thought there was any reasonable chance i could talk him down i would have attempted it, but at that point we had ske-daddled past that. The man was moving with purpose. If it wasnt for his buddy stopping him we'd have been swinging clubs at each other in the fairway, and I don 't like my chances in that one.

Then you answered your own question. You left rather than escalate the situation. Don't need a gun for that.

Take your cart, find the nearest marshal, head to the clubhouse?

A golf course is not the best place for a gun (slight sarcasm) ... slow play, too much testosterone, frustration, big clubs ... just doesn't add up to safety.

Of course, recognizing your right to do so, I remember reading an article where a 30 year vet of the police force, upon retiring, said it was difficult enough for trained professionals to know how to handle a situation and when to fire a gun ... he shuddered at the thought of mentally untrained citizens carrying...

When in doubt, use humor... if that doesn't work, be close to your cart.

I try to use humor, when possible, to disarm others.

Mate, It's an interesting topic made all the more interesting by the range of responses. In two short pages we have seen everything from the informative and enlightening like bducks contribution to the frankly deranged "oh my god gun you is evil" response. Take it all in your stride because to be honest with you even if you posted on something as innocuous as you like white marshmallows you would still get the sane group going all left wing outrageously outragety because you didn't pick the pink marshmallow as your favourite. I agree. If you can talk them down or walk away its always the best option. Believe me, I've done that a couple times and it was over. But sometimes you don't have the option. Something i think people are misunderstanding here is that because i'm talking about introducing a firearm it means that i'm going to pop the guy. I'd have had enough time to draw and tell the guy to stop, but not much else. Me pulling the trigger at that point is entirely up to him.

Very true. Like i said I wasnt looking for a heated debate but i should have known better. I think i'm going to give this thread a rest. Shouldn't have put it on this site in the first place. Oh well, lesson learned :)

I live in an area that I consider very safe (my truck is a 1995 and has never been locked or the keys taken out of the ignition since the day I bought it) but you never know when a maniac is going to show up.

No, you aren't any different.  I know of nobody who carries a concealed weapon, on course or off.  It's one of the more ridiculous recent changes to the modern US.

It's not a recent change. Any recent changes have tended towards limiting the rights of gun owners.

The average person has no business carrying a concealed weapon, and this opinion is from a conservative proponent of a strong military and decisive law enforcement.

I disagree, though it depends largely on what you mean by "average." I consider myself "an average person" but I might be excluded by your definition.

I carried guns when I'd drop myself off at boat launches at 4am. Never had to use it, of course, but I also sleep within a few feet of a gun.

The typical citizen is incapable of making proper split-second decisions on whether or not deadly force is indicated - that can even be a difficult decision for a well trained policeman.

The legal use of lethal force is pretty easy to look up in any state. Typically it's basically "if someone is committing a felony" (with some basic rules re: "person or property"). Getting carjacked? Home invasion? Being attacked and fear for your life? Use of lethal force is allowed. Though, of course, good luck proving it in some situations…

And that's not to say the first and best option should not be to avoid things or run away, but sometimes, that's not possible.

I have no issue with ownership, but if you must carry, strap that hogleg on your thigh and wear it wear it proudly where everyone can see it.  It was good enough John Wayne and Clint Eastwood - should be good enough for us.

I never concealed in Florida. I just knew the laws about transporting (in my car, on my kayak) my gun. I just carried it legally when and where I could (and felt I should).

Guns on the Golf Course? I thought the G in Golf stood for Gentleman. No offense to anyone here or whatever but threads like this make me appreciate living here in Northern California. I cant even remember the last time I've even seen a real gun in person not on the waist of a cop.

Couldnt resist. I want to assure you that i realize that carrying a deadly weapon is not a novelty. I do fully understand that the lives of other people around me depend on my being responsible. I have a great respect for my guns, but at the same time, if I feel that their use is necessary to protect myself from injury or from a felonious crime, I'm going to use that weapon to the lowest degree necessary to end the conflict. If that means firing, so be it.

Texas vs California is night and day when it comes to guns is all I was trying to say. Sheesh
