But she stayed with him, leaving the door open for it to happen again. And sorry but when the abuser says "It'll never happen again." I dont buy that one bit.

1. Its possible that she feels differently than you do and your beliefs are unlikely to factor into her personal intentions.

2. Ascribing gold digging intentions to this lady simply doesn't follow as the only, or even most likely reason for sticking with him.  Battered women often stay with their man.  Here are some common reasons, other than gold digging.  http://www.domesticabuseproject.com/get-educated/compelling-reasons-women-stay/

I think you're being a bit naïve here if you're really questioning why people might voice concern over her decision to marry a guy that knocked her out in an casino elevator.

I have no desire to smear her, but I do question the  judgment of someone that marries a person that has demonstrated an inability to control their temper and has placed hands on them in a violent manner.

Read what they wrote.  They did not express concern over her staying with the guy, they called her a gold digger.  If she asked me for my advice, and told me nothing else, I'd also tell her to get the f out of there.  I wouldn't call her names.

agreed -

but - bad judgment or not, society is still under obligation to protect its citizens...I don't think a commuted sentence or 'time served' etc does the job here at all.  there are kids in that house too

I'd like to move away from the discussion of what the NFL did as a biz decision and move to the more substantial topic.

1 - the casino holding these videos from law enforcement for so long

2 - the crappy sentencing by the legal system for a known violent citizen

I agree, if he weren't an NFL player he'd be in jail and that's where he belongs.

I'm not sure why you believe the casino held these tapes from law enforcement or the NFL.  I posted quotes from Peter King when the first tape was released that indicate that not only did law enforcement view the tape from inside the elevator but so did the NFL.

The legal system failed because Rice is a celebrity, his fiancée failed to press charges or cooperate with the police and she claimed to have instigated Rice into hitting her.

1. The deadspin article says that the police who responded to the scene saw the video.

2. My best guess is that she married him so that she could not be compelled to testify against him.  At that point, they would have had a grainy video with no sound versus the word of the only two eyewitnesses.  And a victim who didn't want to prosecute and was claiming partial responsibilty.  Under those circumstances, a jail sentence may not have been a likely outcome.  I'm totally guessing on this.

Well I think that's a reasonable point of view, but to be fair, that's what you actually said, which is why I took issue with it.  But we all misstate things, I don't doubt your intentions.

Have you seen Peter King's attempt to walk this back?

Quote:

Earlier this summer a source I trusted told me he assumed the NFL had seen the damaging video that was released by TMZ on Monday morning of Rice slugging his then-fiancée, Janay Palmer, in an Atlantic City elevator. The source said league officials had to have seen it. This source has been impeccable, and I believed the information. So I wrote that the league had seen the tape . I should have called the NFL for a comment, a lapse in reporting on my part. The league says it has not seen the tape, and I cannot refute that with certainty. No one from the league has ever knocked down my report to me, and so I was surprised to see the claim today that league officials have not seen the tape.

I hope when this story is fully vetted, we all get the truth and nothing but the truth.

Its amazing how the NFL has control of the media.  If not for social media, Ray Rice probably never would have been suspended.

No comprende.  Naive about what?  I'm saying that this thread is about Ray Rice, what Ray Rice did, what the NFL did or didn't do about Ray Rice, etc, etc.  I'm not questioning that some people might have concerns over her decisions, I'm saying its not relevant.  And suggesting that they are can't help but come across to some of us as sounding like a smear.

I have no desire to smear her

I do believe you, however ...

but I do question the  judgment of someone that marries a person that has demonstrated an inability to control their temper and has placed hands on them in a violent manner.

You did it anyway.

I think that is true of all of ESPN.  They make so much money off of football that they really just can't help it.  I think this ray rice fiasco was the nail in the coffin as far as ESPN's credibilty goes.  Their talking heads were beating the drum about reserving judgment because the NFL and police had all the information and we did not..

Chris Cooley has a radio show in DC and he made a pretty convincing argument that this could be the end of Roger Goodell. The NFL originally thought the video would never leak, so they claimed that they saw it, and that it showed that rice acted in self defense. Then the casino went bust, which meant the people that had access to the tape no longer feared losing their job, and the threat of a lawsuit against the casino for releasing the tape was gone. Without those controls, the NFL knew the tape would get out, so they quickly issued a new policy to look somewhat proactive. Then the tape comes out, and they lie about ever having seen it. The NFL has too much money in this to not have seen the video. They went to great lengths to cover up ray rice beating his wife. Goodell should be done.

I have heard and read the same things which is why I've ripped Goodell since he made the policy change while everyone else patted him on the back for admitting his "mistake".

I'm sure the NFL tried unsuccessfully to convince TMZ to not release the video though I still believe a deal was cut between the NFL and TMZ to hold off on it's release until after this past Sunday to not ruin the opening day.

Sadly, a good portion of the media was willing to support the NFL smoke screen while a few stood alone.  Seems news agencies and journalists are all too willing to sell out their ethics and job duties to be a puppet for the NFL and government these days.

Bye Roger, don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

I hate to jump in the middle of this....but... you think a "regular" citizen in the same situation would be in jail for this?

I seriously doubt it. I'd bet we'd have to build a lot more jails if that were the case.

Actually, it depends on the woman. If she doesn't press charges they don't go to jail... Sadly, a lot of the time the don't.

Was just about to say this. Doesn't matter who you are...if she presses charges, you're in jail.

And that's very common with domestic violence.  The women blame themselves or are afraid of retribution.

Instead of recognizing that, the NFL and the Ravens promoted the idea that Rice's wife bore some responsibility.  The Ravens tweeted her apology.

From Ray Rice's wife In a post from her Instagram page Tuesday morning, and verified by the Baltimore Sun, Janay Rice writes, "I woke up this morning feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it's reality is a nightmare in itself." She continued, "No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific." Rice ended the post by saying, "THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!"
