seems like this whole thing was blown a little out of proportion by sports media.  They cherry picked the phrase to make it seem like Rory was taking a shot at tiger and phil when he was just answering a question about how it was the first time for a very long time since neither phil or tiger was playing in the tour championship.  He even said that he didnt necessarily think that their era was over, just that they were getting older.

What Rory said is pretty much true. The old cliche "the older I get, the better I was" rings true for everyone at some point. Rory was asked a question, and gave an honest answer that may have put him in a no win situation. Perhaps he could have answered the question with a little more tact, but it's over and done with.

Of course the media saw an opening, and ran with it. They are the villains in this story article imho. .

Regardless of facts I think Rory should have just declined to answer a question like that, honestly answering something like that would be for Phil or Tiger to do and I'll bet Rory probably wishes he didn't get asked that question but these are reporters and of course tactfulness is not synonymous with that title.

Completely disagree.

C'mon. He basically got in trouble for saying "I'm younger than Tiger and Phil."

Right, and because of that he should have caught on that it was a "loaded" question that has no way of being answered without causing controversy.

The way he answered it didn't cause controversy. Dumbos on the media, and silly people who listen to those dumbos are what caused the "controversy."

Yeah.

You can't blame Rory for saying something as innocuous (and factual) as "the sky is blue" and then a bunch of people turning it into something it wasn't.

I'm going to tell my wife tonight that she's older than me and weighs more than she did when we were married. Totally innocuous, factual statements. Then I'll post a picture of myself online tomorrow with a shoe planted in my corn hole. Wait a minute, maybe I shouldn't say that...

The difference is that Rory was answering a question posed to him. He didn't just say it out of the blue.

When my wife asks me if she looks bigger and older than she did 15 years ago, I'm going to tell her "Hun, empirically you are a lot older and a bit heavier as well." I'm imagining a shoe in my corn hole then as well.

Regardless of facts I think Rory should have just declined to answer a question like that,

The question - or statement -  was about Phil and Tiger both being absent.

Yeah------he should have refused to comment. That would have made him look good. :-O

At least we know why athlete interviews are so boring - because the media  (And forum posters) love making a storm in a teacup.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
    • I got another one today....Number 17. Par 5 that has water left and right on the layup. I smacked a drive down the left side and got a little lazy on the layup and fanned my 6 iron. With 112 to a crowned green I got it to 3 feet and birdie!  Only 5 and 15 is left for this year!
    • Maybe I didn’t explain this properly. Back and front can be confusing.  There was no place in the bunker that didn’t have 2-3 inches of rain water in it, except for a small spot on the slope nearest the pin. If I had dropped there I would be moving 6-7 feet closer to the hole. Since my ball was just inside the bunker, farthest side from the hole, I dropped one club length backward, which brought me out of the bunker. I could not have hit from that deep of water. Are you saying I would have had to take a penalty stroke due to rain water?
    • Day 550, May 5, 2024 Got a good hour in with a typical (for me) two-stick setup: pool noodle angled in front, yardstick on the ground angled 45° behind me.
    • Day 130: Cinco de Mayo Day 7/24 of Full Speed Spectrum training. Difficult training day after struggling to certify my warmup yesterday, and today. Finished 13 mph lower than my training speed on Thursday. Hope to hit some balls today.
