I would recommend creating a my swing thread here

It is hard to sway what is actually going on in your swing with out seeing it.

I might suggest you take a longer club, and swing a little easier. A slower swing sometimes creates more control. The longer club could give you the distance needed with more control, due to the slower swing speed.

When I got back into golf some months ago, I looked at my distance chart vs my clubs. That chart was almost 3 years old. To get the distances on my return to golf I had 3 years earlier, I had to swing my clubs much faster than I was capable of controlling. Once I got it through my thick head, while checking my ego,  to swing slower, and use longer clubs, my control started to return for the distances needed. Over the past months, my distances have been increasing with my individual clubs.

I second this @djcs1204 , start a swing thread so you can get help on what you need to work on. Good chance it will be a Key #1 or 2 piece.

I have a lesson set up for Thursday with the local teaching Pro. I set it up after hitting my driver today the way described in iasacs' thread "hitting up or down with the driver." I hit my driver high and far with a baby fade today, and was very happy. The ones I came OTT I pulled dead straight, way left of the target. I still can't take a do it with my irons or hit them in the general are of which I'm aiming.

Dead straight going left?  I know it well.  My hips are usually dead and my shoulders are doing all the work. So I'm sweeping the clubhead across the ball from the outside and the clubhead path is straight left.  One consoling thought is that i am not alone in the golf universe.

Posted
That would be exactly it. I felt like my hips were engaged, but I'll be Danes if I didn't hit a BOMB damned near 30-50 yards left of where I was aiming. Felt good off the face and all!

Making the assumption that you are right handed.  Had the same problem and took lesson from a professional teacher.  Man he had some neat toys that covered all that cool stuff we think is important.  Went to the guy four times and every time he worked with me on the lower body, leg and foot action.  For me, if I sync up my hips, legs and feet, it all comes together.  Somebody more knowledgeable than me can explain it in detail, but my legs would bend on the backswing which forces the arms to try to make corrections which was a disaster.  I see the leg problem in many mid to high handicap problems.

I am right handed, but oddly enough I have a left handed set of clubs I play around with from time to time. I can hit the piss out of my practice balls (wiffle or foam) but put a real ball on front and I go silly.

I saw a DVD, no drill! Ha!

My bad, got you mixed up with someone else. Start a swing thread and I'll take a look.

I had the exact same problem. Took out the 4,5, and 6 irons and replaced them with Cobra Baffler Hybrids.....night and day difference.

Darn, no posts stating "Simple, just learn to hit your 8i 170 yards."

Seriously, Mike's suggestion is the best. Hybrids are great and everything, but it's going to cost you more than fixing your swing.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
