@RFKFREAK can't be mad at the idiot media. Give the kid a shot. I just got to that point, they were comparing his mindset to Manning not achievements.

There's some fine logic. You aren't a fan because of what others say.  BTW - I think I have Spieth at 29 birdies over his last 69 holes of tournament play.

My thoughts too. Its Spieths fault that the NBC announcers are morons? They also spent 2 minutes explaining how the ball sounds different off of Stensons clubface because of how he compresses the ball and how he hits it off the sweet spot (apparently something that all the other world class players don't so). Do you hate Stwnson too?? ;)

I was cringing during this. The ball does compress but...it just doesn't sound like that is what they are referencing.

Lindsay is going to call Tiger to bust his balls after winning the downhill... They'll be no living with her for awhile...

It doesn't really compress, actually… It does deform, though. :)

And the language (compression instead of deformation) doesn't even bother me ... It's the idea that Stenson does it so much better than all the rest of them. That's pure hogwash. If it really does sound different it's probablysonething attributable to his club and/or ball.

Okay. I meant that. It does distort it.

That sounds like a boring narrative for TV tho, their explanation sounds sooooo much more interesting

And NBC just demonstrated why I'm not a fan of Spieth. They just equated him to Peyton Manning in football.

Peyton's pro career has spanned over 15 years and they're speaking about Spieth as though he's accomplished in golf what Peyton has in pro football over a similar length of time.

They just go so gaga and drool all over this kid that all it does is make me root against him so I don't have to hear it.

Which, btw, was why I really enjoyed Bubba winning the Masters this year. I can only imagine what NBC/GC/CBS would do if Spieth had won the Masters.

Hey, NBC, if you want to compare someone to Peyton, the only person in the golf world I can think of within the last thirty years is Tiger.

I didn't really care for him because I thought it was all hype, but I can't help but root for someone playing impressive golf

I just said I wasn't a fan, not that I wish him ill. There are certain athletes that the media goes gaga over and that irritates me. I still feel that comparison isn't justified. The kid has two years or so as a pro and they're already saying he's mastered the mental side of golf like Manning has mastered the mental side of football. I think it's a preposterous thing to say. I'm fine with informing viewers how an athlete does a particular action or skill better than other pros but I believe the networks decide certain athletes have something they can market the heck out of and they drool over those athletes because it helps their bottom line. Just look at Anna Kournikova, Danica Patrick, or, in NY, David Wright of the Mets. They hype them up, heap all this praise on them, not because of their accomplishments but because they have a certain look or meet a barometer to help their bottom line.

Oh, like I said earlier, he's killing it and I have no problem acknowledging it. I just know that if he wins this tournament after his win in Australia, I won't be watching the GC for a while.

I just don't see how any of that is Spieths fault. Plus you're making some wishy washy comparisons there. AK and DP never won squat, but Spieth has already won twice, including last week, and came very close to winning the first Masters he ever played in, and is cake walking his way through this field to a likely win tomorrow. Not exactly the kind of person you throw into the "all hype and no substance" category.

This will no doubt make @colin007 ecstatic!

I am happy for him. Proud of him too, for the way he toughed that out. Btw, anyone know officially how many duffed chips he's had? I think it's somewhere around 8 or 9? It's that right? Edit-I just counted 9, including a flubbed bunker shot and a bladed chip. Un-freaking-believable......

I'm not saying it's Spieth's fault. However, just like I didn't like the Dallas Cowboys in the 90's because the were labeled, "America's Team," for similar bottom line financial reasons, I don't root for Spieth because of how much he's hyped up. I understand he's won two (possibly three after tomorrow) tournaments, but I felt the coverage he got between winning the John Deer last year and this years Master's was ridiculous. That was more of my point on AS, DP, and DW. Obviously it's not identical because Spieth won an event but my underlying point of an athlete being super hyped up to a huge level without their accomplishments being the basis for it is my point. If they put that kind of praise on Tiger or Rory, I wouldn't have a problem with it because they've accomplished some spectacular things but when they put it on someone for purely bottom line purposes, I'm not likely to root for that person.

@Golfingdad some people like to be contrarian. Some people kind of inwardly rebel against being told that they have to like someone. You can see it in every sport. It's more common in team sports, but still…

Something like that. For example, everyone and their mother praised Michael Jordan to no end in the 90's and, as a Knicks fan, because he crushed my desire to see the Knicks win a championship almost every year, I wasn't a fan of his. However, I never for a moment thought the media over hyped him because he was so dominant from pretty much the moment he entered the NBA.

Why wouldn't they hype someone who, at 20 years old almost won the Masters, won the John Deere, won in Australia, and now is on the verge of winning the Hero?

Let's see:

Excellent course management.

Handles himself well.

Dresses respectably.

21 and keeps his cool.

Incredible short game

Great putter.

Hits lots of fairways.

In short, he's got everything you nay-sayers never had.

I've been telling my golf buddies to watch this guy for the last 2 years.

Hype or no hype from the media, he's the real thing. Why shouldn't they rally around him?

I'm guessing a major this year and 2 more wins.

They started over hyping him up after he won the John Deer before his performance in this years Masters and, IMO, at that time, it was unwarranted. I think their basically looking for the next Tiger and doing everything they can to hype Spieth up in hopes that he'll carry the sport like Tiger did.
